As a woman with long curly hair I know first hand how wild and untamed it can quickly get. I also understand the need to straighten it, so let me share some tips on how to do it properly.
You will need:
- A Flat Iron (Preferably a smaller one that can reach 25 – 30 in heat)
- A thin Comb
- A thick brush
- Plenty of hair bands
- Heat protection spray
- Baby oil or Shine on Spray
Brush out all of your hair. Yes this will get wild but if you have any knots or curl twists you need to have them brushed out before you start straightening. You do not want to have to cut out any knots so use the detangler to help brush out the knots.
Once you have brushed out all of your hair, take time to section every bit off. This mean taking about the width of your index and middle finger amount of hair and putting it in a rubber band. You need to section off your hair to help you efficiently finish this project. ***If you do not section off your hair you will end up mixing straight hair with curly and could end up missing a portion!***
Spray heat protection all over your hair. This is extremely important because without it you can end up with spit ends and hair falling out. Take extra time to get the roots and tips. DO NOT START STRAIGHTENING YOUR HAIR WITH HAIR WET. Continue to next step once your hair is dry.
Grab a small portion of your hair and use flat iron on full heat on the tips of your hair working your way up. This is a better way then starting from your roots as you can end up missing huge portions while working down. Repeat this step till all of your hair is completed.
Use small comb to go through your now straightened hair. This will help you figure out if you missed any curly pieces or if you need to redo any sections.
Once you have finished combing through it, spritz a bit of baby oil through out your hair. This will help you to keep your hair moisturized and have a bit of shine as well.
As a general tip, try not to touch your hair too much as you will end up frizzing it up. Don’t re-straighten your hair if you haven’t washed it in 3-5 days. Towards the end of the week you should deep condition it before starting the process over again.
