I was contacted by Iams about their Home 4 the Holidays program. Given their focus on adopting pets (and food for shelters…) from local rescue organizations and finding them homes in time for the holidays, I thought PDX folks should know about this important national campaign and which local shelters are partnering with them. More on how three Portland rescue organizations are benefitting from the Home 4 the Holidays and the cool Iams Bags 4 Bowls programs below.
If you adopt a pet between now and January 3, 2012, you can create a super cute custom adoption announcement or card to share with family and friends! Each card created and shared automatically results in a meal donated to an animal organization through their Bags 4 Bowls program. Their goal is to donate 5 million meals! People can become a fan of the Iams Facebook page (www.facebook.com/iams) and then customize a card by using one of the templates via this platform. Uploading a picture is simple.
Iams Home 4 the Holidays participating shelters in the Portland area are:
- Animal Aid Inc., Portland
- Family Dogs New Life Shelter, Portland
- Foster Pets, Portland
Each participating shelter above is part of the Bags 4 Bowls program and they also receive adoption kits (about nutrition, training and proper care) from Iams to hand out to new pet parents who adopt through them. This is another nice benefit for new pet owners that typically have tons of questions when they get home.
“Each year, as many as 4 million orphaned dogs and cats are euthanized due to shelter overcrowding – that is approximately one pet every eight seconds,” said Mike Arms, founder of the adoption drive and president of Helen Woodward Animal Center. “Since partnering with Iams on the adoption drive 13 years ago, we have really seen the benefit of what this program can do for orphaned animals, and the families who adopt.”
Background from their press release: Iams Home 4 the Holidays, one of the world’s largest pet adoption programs, kicked off its annual adoption drive with the goal of finding homes for 1.5 million orphaned pets! Now in its 13th year, the program, which runs from October 1, 2011 through January 3, 2012, has already helped 5.8 million pets find loving homes across the globe.
People can become a fan of the Iams Facebook page (www.facebook.com/iams) and create a custom adoption announcement or holiday card to share the news of their new four-legged family member or send a season’s greeting to their family and friends. For each card created and shared, Iams will donate meals to an animal organization in need through their Bags 4 Bowls program.
TIP from me: So many shelters need donations but if you are struggling, consider the food you could donate for those fostering some of the dogs and cats waiting for their forever families. Or contact the Pongo Fund too. It’s a local pet food bank.
