You know them. You love them. They are the anti heroes. They are those psychotic cinematic masters of blood, gore and dismemberment we all love to watch, and as we grow closer to the time of Halloween, I present here a list to help pay homage to these groovy ghouls, and the murderous mayhem they revel in.
Below are ten nasty cinematic kills. These are standouts. You might agree they deserve the spotlight. You may not. This list isn’t limited, and as always, I would love to hear your thoughts. Enjoy!
10-Hellraiser’s death of Larry-When Andrew Robinson’s body is rife with hooks and his face looks painfully stretched before he’s torn apart is the stuff of splattered magic.
9-Johnny Depp’s fountain of fun in ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’- Who can forget when Johnny Depp, 80’s stereo system and all, disappears into his mattress to be replaced with a fountain of gore? It was the stuff that dreams are made of.
8-Rusty Nail’s wallet chain kill from ‘Joyride 2’-Having a wallet chain that’s a chainsaw chain is pretty cool, but sawing a guy’s jaw off with it free hand is disturbing and nasty in all the right ways.
7- Sutter’s hot swing kill in ‘Bereavement’- The killing of Melissa the Waitress by madman Sutter with a meat hook through the leg and a flash fry is exceedingly nasty, and deserves a mention for its controlled ferocity.
6-Scott Speedman’s death in ‘The Strangers’- When Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler’s characters are slowly being stabbed to death, and the three masked assailants are asked ‘Why are you doing this?’ it is the childlike answer ‘Because you were home,’ that sets a bullet in the heart moment of childlike and menace at the same time. The whole film is very clever. This point just drives that point home.
5-Chromeskull’s ‘face off’ kill from ‘Laid to Rest’- One minute Johnathan Schaech has a face, the next he has it sliced off by the film’s very cool villain. The act is quick, easy, and simple as pie. The mess is great, and the death is very effective. Kudos all around go to writer/director Rob Hall.
4-Victor Crowley’s ‘jaws of death’ kill from ‘Hatchet’- A new meaning to ‘open your mouth and say ah…’This is one incredibly nasty kill. It’s quick, clean, hilarious, ripping and gory all at once. It’s a work of pure genius lovingly carried out by Kane Hodder and the great Adam Green. If you haven’t seen the film yet, rectify that quickly.
3-John Ryder’s truck pull from ‘The Hitcher’- To see Jennifer Jason Leigh strung up between an 18 wheeler and its bed, with a psychotic Rutger Hauer loving every minute of it evokes all the right squirms.
2-Otis’ log jam in ‘The Devil’s Rejects’-When Bill Moseley pulls the wind whipped hair from his face to reveal a look of total stone cold psychosis and evil before uttering ‘I am the Devil…’ during the slaying of Roy Sullivan by beating him to death with a thick log, it sends chills up the spine.
1-Jason Voorhees’ sleeping bag kill from ‘Friday the 13th VII’- A sleeping bag, a tree, a counselor…Slam bang movie gold brought to us once again by the fantastically furious force that is Kane Hodder.
