An injury will keep Olympic floor champion Sandra Izbasa off the mats in Tokyo at next week’s World Championships, according to several news reports.
The exact nature of Izbasa’s injury has not been disclosed, but she reportedly complained of a sore Achilles during the pre-Worlds international friendly meets. Izbasa, who won the European titles on vault and floor in April, also sat out of the Romanian Nationals last month in order to rest and prepare for Worlds.
It’s worth noting that Izbasa tore her Achilles tendon right before the 2009 World Championshiops but recovered in time to make a strong showing in 2010, where she made the World final on floor. She has only looked better since.
In Izbasa’s stead, Romania has called up World team alternate Dana Andrei, who may be replaced by Catalina Ponor once in Tokyo.
The Romanians, who are modestly hoping for a top three finish in the team competition, will have to rely more now on the performances of 2010 World team members Ana Porgras, Diana Chelaru and Raluca Haidu, as well as the experience of Ponor. Amelia Racea and first-year senior Diana Bulimar round out Romania’s team.
