What do non-profit animal rescue operations do when economic times are tough and government funding is cut? When foreclosures are breaking most previous record numbers and more pets are surrendered to shelters but less food and monetary donations are coming in?
They team up with larger companies who also benefit from the smaller networks of animal organizations.
They link to millions of people through the use of technology.
They make it quick and simple for anyone to make donations.
Pedigree, a large dog food production company has an on-going adoption drive where any animal shelter or rescue can apply for a grant to receive food donations. The money from these grants come from consumers buying their brand’s dry dog food and making donations to Pedigree Foundation. Animal rescue businesses and consumers can keep up with current fundraisers on Pedigree’s Facebook fan page , or through m.pedigree.com from a smart phone. To give an idea of how much assistance is given to shelter dogs, here is a quote from one of Pedigree’s adoption drive pages: *In 2010, for every Fan or Like of The PEDIGREE® Adoption Drive at facebook.com, PEDIGREE® Brand donated 8 oz. of PEDIGREE® Brand Dry Food for Dogs to animal shelters selected by PEDIGREE® Brand, up to a total of 2 million lbs. of food, the equivalent of one bowl of food for each of the estimated four million dogs that wind up in shelters and breed rescue organizations each year.
Hill’s is another dog food company that donates food to shelters. In this case, the shelter feeds only Hill’s brand food and pays shipping costs for food delivery and in turn advertises the company’s food. Orange County Animal Services in Orlando, both locations of the SPCA of Central Florida, Seminole County Animal Shelter and Greyhound Pets of America-Greater Orlando are all in partnership with Hill’s “Shelter Nutrition” program.
In addition to Hill’s program, Greyhound Pets of America-Greater Orlando is linked to Simple Dog online fundraisers, where for every bumper sticker or car magnet (variety to chose from, not just pertaining to greyhounds) purchased for $10, $5 dollars goes to a shelter or rescue. The purchaser choses the name of the rescue receiving the donation, at the time of purchase.
The Animal Rescue Site is an online site with a “click to give” button that, for every click, .6 bowls of food are given to animal rescues. Bookmark the site or receive an email a day as a reminder to click and give for free. Last year, voters clicks funded the value of 78.7 million bowls of food and purchases at their online store funded an additional 13.2 million bowls of food (stats from The Animal Rescue Site). Easy and takes less than 5 seconds to give. Central Florida rescues and shelters benefit from this national organization as well. Sanford, Fl-based Pet Rescue by Judy was just awarded a cash donation by winning a certain number of supporters’ votes on one of The Animal Rescue Site’s challenges. Seminole County Animal Services has also received monetary aide from The Animal Rescue Site.
