Yvonne Strahovski is known for kicking butt week-in and week-out as super spy Sarah Walker on television’s “Chuck.” Therefore, it may come as a surprise to see the actress holster her fists for the new dramatic actioner “Killer Elite.”
“I was a little jealous that I was not kicking some butt in the movie but it was really nice to change the pace up,” Strahovski says. “One of the greatest things about being an actor is that you get to be so many different people in one lifetime. So, for me, the fact that I did get to change it up was a real bonus.”
In “Killer Elite,” Jason Statham stars as a formidable special-ops agent named Danny who must cut his way through a team of assassins to rescue his kidnapped mentor Hunter (Robert De Niro). Yvonne Strahovski plays Danny’s girlfriend Anne – a character the actress believes is the heart of the movie.
“There is all of this amazing action going on and then there is this anchor that is the love story that occurs between Anne and Danny,” Strahovski explains. “We get to see a softer side of Jason. We are always watching him be the tough guy in movies. He is very good at being the action star.”
Having been born in Sydney, Australia, the actress jumped at the opportunity to join “Killer Elite’s” cast thereby returning to her roots as some scenes were shot on location in Melbourne. Moreover, Strahovski got to speak with her native accent – something she rarely gets to do onscreen. However, the chance to work with her fellow cast members was perhaps the biggest draw of all.
“Jason is a really fun guy to work with,” Strahovski says. “He is very focused when we work and very funny in between scenes. He is a brilliantly enthusiastic guy. I also learned that I can hold it together when shooting a scene with Robert De Niro. That was certainly quite a test. It was sort of overwhelming, exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time to work with such a legend.”
Speaking of working with a legend, Strahovski will appear on the big screen again next November alongside Barbara Streisand in “My Mother’s Curse,” a comedy – which also stars Seth Rogan – about an inventor who hits the road with his mother. Until then, though, the actress can seen in the fifth and final season of “Chuck,” premiering Oct. 21 on NBC.
“It is bittersweet,” says Strahovski, noting that beginning to bid adieu to the series is already becoming an emotional experience. “Aside from the amazing guest stars this season, the storyline has changed a whole lot because now Chuck and Sarah are married and Morgan now has the intersect. It is a different dynamic. The rest of the family knows now, too, so that makes the stakes a little higher.”
