The metal community in and around the Syracuse area and around the world have been anticipating the new release from Shadows Fall. I came across this band on Myspace near the time when they released their second album, “Of One Blood”. I was hooked immediately. These guys only get better with every step they take and last year’s cover of Ozzy Ozbourne’s “BarK at the Moon” was off the hook killer. 2004’s “The War Within” remains a must in my CD player as is 2009’s “Retribution”. The latter was hailed as that year’s “Black” album.
The thing that hits you when you listen to these guys is the talent level; its off the charts. Brian Fair has the ultimate voice in metal today. Jonathon Donais is hands down one of the best metal soloists in the world. Matt Bachand’s guitar is right with him and his vocals are a perfect melodic mix to Brian’s powerful voice. Paul Romanko is the most underestimated bass player out there at the moment. As for best drummer in metal; I don’t know anyone better than Jason Bittner; anywhere. I had the opportunity to do a little Q&A with founding member Matt Bachand about the band. Look for much more on Shadows Fall in the very near future.
I would like to start off by saying thank you for taking time out to do this. I know you all are extremely busy right now with a new album in the works.
Matt: No Problem.
Speaking of which, how is the new album coming together? What can we expect after Retribution? I must say that if I had your stuff on vinyl, I would have worn every record out at least twice.
Matt: It’s coming along great actually, at this point we have about 12 songs completed and plan on working a couple more in there before actual tracking begins on the new album. I think it’s a pretty natural follow up to retribution where as you will get a little bit of everything from the heavy moments to the melodic ones. I have always been a fan of having a well rounded album where each track has its own identity.
Can you describe the song writing process for you guys? How does a song come together?
Matt: Typically Jon and I will piece together a basic skeleton of a song and then bring it to the whole band to jam out on and smooth out all the rough edges. It doesn’t ALWAYS happen that way but that’s the majority of it anyways.
“..the ferocious and melodic witches’ brew Shadows Fall always seems to nail.” That was from David Jeffries of Allmusic in describing “Fallout from the War”. How would you guys describe yourselves? I just think you are hands down, the best metal band anywhere.
Matt: I would say that description is pretty flattering considering it was based on a collection of B-side leftovers and cover songs that isn’t actually even an album and was slapped together in 2 days!!!
I just like to say that we are a metal band; I hate being labeled into all these new “sub-genres” that don’t mean anything or have any reference point whatsoever to what the band is actually about. The music should do the talking and not what some fan or journalist labels you.
I completely agree with you on that point. I hate the labels that get floated around out there. Are you guys still calling all the shots when it comes to the songs or is there any outside influence, and are there any more covers coming out?
Matt: We have always called the shots and WILL always call the shots. That’s what created the vibe of this band in the first place and after over 15 years as a band there is no reason to mess with a good thing. As far as covers, I have a few tricks up my sleeve but I can’t really say as of yet what is going to happen, you will just have to wait and see!
Are there tour plans set yet in support of the new album yet? When can we see you in Syracuse, NY? (Had to ask!)
Matt: Nothing solidified as of yet but you can definitely expect to see us out on tour after the first of the year!
Once again, thanks! Most of the readers are huge fans of the band, and from the feedback are psyched for this, anything you want to say to them directly here?
Matt: Thanks for all the support and not abandoning us after all these years and we hope you keep listening to our music for many more years to come!
I gaurantee we will be listening! If you have not heard this band; you need to, they are without a doubt one of the best in the world in metal.
