Happy Endings’ Penny (Casey Wilson) really loves couple costumes. You may remember the double Snookis of last year. In fact, she loves them so much that she risks telling her new beau about her plans for them to don one in “Spooky Endings,” this season’s Halloween episode and he breaks up with her. But just like the double Snookis, Max (Adam Pally) comes through once again. And their costume is just one small reason why this holiday episode may have been mistitled. After all, the only thing “spooky” about Halloween with the Happy Endings gang is that its way more fun than any of the real Halloween parties we have been to!

This time around, it is not Brad (Damon Wayans Jr.) who has an outdated costume– actually Brad opts not to dress up at all, which irks Jane (Eliza Coupe), who wanted to do a couples’ costume herself. But we’ll get to them in a minute… No, Dave (Zachary Knighton) is the one who steps into pop culture past and whips out his best Austin Powers. A reference so old, will anyone even get it? All part of the fun had with this gang!
Meanwhile, Alex (Elisha Cuthbert), who has been sick, is determined to be the sexiest one in the room, so she straps on a white dress and what appears to be an even blonder wig and goes as Marilyn Monroe, a pop culture icon no one will forget. Add in her “sexy phlegm” voice, and she quickly attracts the hottest guy in the room (guest star David Walton), who just happens to be dressed as a baseball player. A Cub, not a Yankee, but still. It’s a makeshift couples’ costume, right? It seems that way for a little while, but a case of mistaken identity may end up dooming them before they even really start.
Penny meets a guy (guest star Matt Besser) at the top of the party and spends the rest of the night trying to flirt and dance with him all the while placating Max, who is literally attached to her at the hip area. When he meets a guy, too, things get even more complicated. Technically the old adages should apply: “Dance with the one that brought you” and “Bros before hos,” but this is Max and Penny, so, well, let’s just say they find a way to compromise so they can both attempt to get some.
Out in the suburbs, Jane and Brad are housesitting for a friend, tasked with passing candy to the neighborhood kids. But things quickly go awry when they run out before the “big kids” arrive, leaving them to scramble and take cover. Brad was worried the suburbs would be boring but they breed some little monsters out there. And not the good, Lady Gaga-loving kind.
We have yet to meet an episode of Happy Endings that we did not absolutely love and watch half a dozen times in a row and tell all our friends (and you, our loyal readers) to tune into, but honestly? There is just something extra special about holiday episodes. Halloween has never been one of our favorite holidays personally, but seeing how the Happy Endings gang does it, we’re rethinking our approach and therefore our appreciation a bit. Cougar Town may have created “Movie Mash-up,” but Happy Endings just bested them with a “Movie Mash-up” costume. It’s no “Rosa Parks and Recreation,” but it’s pretty good nonetheless.
Happy Endings airs on Wednesday at 9:30pm on ABC. “Spooky Endings’ airs on October 26th 2011 but you can check out the episode– in full!– right now, in the video to the left!
