I see three events as particularly interesting to families where there may be large age spread, like mine for the weekend of Sept. 16 – 18, 2011.
Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall Experience. If you don’t see a trip to Washington, D.C. in your near future, head over to West Des Moines for the Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall Experience. A replica of the Vietnam War memorial is hosted on the lawn behind McLaren’s Funeral Home at Resthaven Cemetery. It is well-lit and open 24 hours each day this weekend.
McLaren’s Funeral Home/Resthaven Cemetery
801 19th St
West Des Moines
Vehicles must enter from the Ashworth Road entrance and exit through the 19th St. driveway. Signs show the way for parking areas. The replica wall is stroller and wheelchair friendly with accessible ramps and boardwalk will get families close to the wall. Schedule of events is listed at the memorial wall website.
IronKids Triathlon National Championships. Another event in West Des Moines, triathlons have a lot of action, easy rules that all ages can understand and follow. If a child is interested in trying a new sport, watching it from the front row can help determine if and how to approach it. Schedule for Saturday’s event, parking, and spectating details can be found at the event website.
Buddy the Cougar’s first birthday party. Red Rock Wildlife Conservation Center has had a Des Moines location for over a year. For a $1.00 donation per person, families can view, hear and interact with Iowa Wildlife including wolves, a cougar, bobcat, lynx, foxes and more. Located upstairs at Merle Hay Mall, the birthday party on Sat., Sept. 17, will include educational games, puma programs, cake and refreshments by Vander Ploegs and Jaarsma Bakery in Pella, face painting, an auction for Buddy’s baby teeth and paw-print. T-shirts made by Buddy – he paints with his paws – are available by pre-order only from this website. Contact: Kristie for more information.

Simply because I couldn’t get more information, I have relegated the next event to the bottom of the list. It looks fun, but there were no replies in my request for further details on the cause and musicians. Internet searches yielded little.
