The leaves on the trees are turning colors and the cooler air has moved into Iowa. Step outside and the air smells of fall and the sky is full of migrating birds. And of course, with fall comes everyone’s favorite time of year, HALLOWEEN!!! Halloween is just around the corner. Stores have already lined their shelves with the familiar bags of candy and the aisles full of decorations. Costumes are hung with children dancing around franticly trying to decide whether to be Spiderman or Batman. Halloween is one of the most fun holiday celebrations of our present time.
As a child, Halloween is the time of year to be that one person you admire. For boys under the age of 10, it usually ends up being a favorite superhero or a person who works in public service, like a cop or fireman. For girls, princesses and witches are the favorites with cartoon characters coming in a close third. For little girls, Halloween is exciting because they get to dress up, look cute or pretty and enjoy running around in beautiful costumes. Boys get excited as they get to pretend to leap across buildings or fly spaceships through the sky.
But for older children, Halloween becomes a time of gore, horror and edgy. You see the kids covered in fake blood, body limbs usually missing or severed. Girls tend to want to be a bit on the mature side, showing that they have grown up from the princess costumes of their past. They want to be noticed, commented on how amazing they look. They go from pretty in pink to borderline adult with some of the costumes that line shelves today. They also graduate from trick or treating with family, to going out in groups to see if they can get some candy. Most towns have teen dances these nights, something for the older kids to go out and enjoy while staying safe at the same time.
Adults have taken Halloween to an entire new stage. Halloween used to be for children, trick or treating, parties at school and fun costumes. But now with amazing haunted houses, bars hosting costume contests and the fun of getting to get dressed up, adults have taken center stage when it comes to Halloween. Entire stores open in September full of unique and fun costumes for adults. They range from average to horrifying. Some are cutesy and some are down right dirty. There are costumes from the past, the future and even the unknown. You can dress up as your favorite politician or get naughty and be something sexy. There are couple costumes and accessories to doll up your homemade costume. But no matter what you dress up as, having fun is always the reason for the season when it comes to adults and Halloween.
While the history of Halloween is full of tricks and treats, present day brings us to a time where you can let loose, have fun and just enjoy the night. Whether you stay home and hand out candy or bar hop with your buds, Halloween can be a night full of giggles and screams. Just don’t forget the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups!!!
