Grandparents are often portrayed as the keepers of the cookie jar and it is always stocked for the grandchildren. I can remember my grandmother always had home baked pies and cakes, or my favorite which was homemade fudge. It was fun to go to her house and “load up” on all the goodies. There are several good reasons that we need to change this image.
It is important to keep children’s teeth healthy, especially at a very young age. The teeth are place holders and loosing teeth early can cause permanent teeth to come into mouth in the wrong position. Making the children’s teeth look like Dracula and not function properly. This hurts the child’s self esteem as they feel ugly. Foods full of sugar cause decay. Remember that toothaches hurt and none of us want our precious little ones to hurt.
Juvenile diabetes is on the rise and it is a killer. Our little ones are overweight and out of shape. Diabetes can cause loss of sight and kidney and heart disease. This disease is nothing to play with and a horrible disease to deal with. Cutting out sugary foods and drinks will help to prevent diabetes. Having a healthy diet and adding exercise is a great way to head off this deadly disease.
So how do we stay fun and make the little ones happy? Children love to do things outside. Just a walk outside with them. Let them see the world through your eyes and it can mean a lot to a child. We have the resource to be the child’s best friend. Reading books, drawing a picture, or getting the child to tell you a story would make a very special day.
Snacks can taste good and not be filled with sugar. Fruits are always good and how about some peanut or almond butter on a celery stick with a few raisins on the top to be ‘log ants.’ Small pizzas are always a hit also. Vegetables can be added to the pizza. Sweet potato fries are a real hit. The list is endless.
Whatever you do have fun with these special children. They grow up so fast. Take time while you have them to enjoy and make memories!
