There’s a hilarious new reason to hit up Augusta House on Saturdays. And it’s completely made-up. Toronto’s Opening Night Theatre company literally “makes-up” a brand new show on the spot each Saturday when it takes to the stage with its “Smash Hit” improvised musical.
Each week the team of comedians and musicians take an audience suggestion and transform it into an imaginative series of sketches, combining comedy and song in an hour long side-splitting spectacle. Every Saturday is their opening night and closing night….meaning anything can happen.
“We love musical theatre and we love the energy of improvisation,” says Stephanie Sheri, Artistic Director and one of the Executive Producers. “We wanted to create something funny, unique, spontaneous, and musical in Toronto that captures that energy.” Founded in the summer of 2011, the improvised musical theatre company has also launched a new website: www.openingnighttheatre.com.
Playing at 7:30 pm in Kensington Market’s Augusta House, Smash Hit is Pay What You Can and features a special guest musician each week to kick off the show.
The musical debuted on October 15, 2011 as singer-songwriter Daiva Paskauskas captured the crowd with her lovely original acoustic folk-pop songs. Then ensued “Revenge: The Musical”, spawned by that evening’s audience theme idea. The nonsensical sketches that followed included “baby trading” and a “trans-unicorn”. Don’t ask. Just bring your imagination, an open mind, and see for yourself what other silly surprises they have in store. As the comedians come up with off-the-cuff scenes and dialogue, Stephanie Sheri shows her prowess on keys, devising music on the spot as the team spontaneously breaks into song. They’ll have you smiling, if not laughing out loud, especially if you can appreciate the creativity of improv.
Augusta House is a laid-back bar and makes a comfortable backdrop for the show. Although it is also known for its spirited Saturday night dance parties (at 10pm), during the show it’s set with tables, candlelight and bowls of pretzels for your snacking pleasure. There are also cushy benches along the side of the room where you can cozy up for the entertainment, and you can grab a drink at the full bar. If all that music and laughter gets you in the mood to boogie, you can stay for the DJ after or at least partake in some pretty tempting drink specials, including $3.50 shots.
