How cool would it be to be invited on stage by a national headliner to sing? That’s exactly what happened at the Sellersville Theater this weekend, when Kip Winger showed up for an acoustic show. Winger, best known for his songs with the band by the same name, in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, came out on stage with just a guitar. It was acoustic, but it was plugged in and it was loud.
Before Winger took the stage, the crowd was treated to Sandy Hall, who floored everyone with her amazing voice. Hall, best know for being the lead vocalist for Kick It Out, a Heart tribute band, wowed the crowd, espcially, when she brought out “Crazy On You”, a Heart cover song. She sounds more Ann Wilson than Ann Wilson does. Her husband, Chris played guitar, while Sandy took care of the vocals.
Winger came out on stage, played one note and left the stage. The show was over. For a second, then he came back out and did something most people did not expect him to do. He interacted with the crowd in between songs. He is out on tour alone, with no crew, techs or roadies. He tunes his own guitar on this show. It was during his banter with the crowd that was delightful. “Anyone got any requests”? Winger asked. The crowd shouted out their favorites, “Madalaine”, “Under One Condition”, “Headed for a Heartbreak”, were some of songs shouted out. To which Kip showed a set list taped to his guitar and said, “Sorry, I got a set list and I’m not playing those tonight”. He them heard someone shout out for an Alice Cooper song and he played a bit of “Schools Out”, before deliving into the requests. Winger played in Alice Cooper’s band in the mid 1980’s.
He heard somone in the crowd shouting out for a song, “I’m not sure I remember it, to which the person said she would make up her own words. “This I gotta hear”, and before you know it Sherri Pepper from central New Jersey was onstage singing “Nothing” with her idol. How cool is that. During another instance, Kip hears an audience member wail a very distinct heavy metal scream towards the end of a song. Kip asked him if he knew his material, to which the man named Bill replied in the affirmative. Within a minute, he too was on stage belting out a tune with Winger.
In the crowd, was a very good looking girl that kept to herself. Kip called out to Fiona to come onstage and sing. It turns out this girl was Fiona, a singer in her own right has worked with Kip many times before. She lives in New Jersey as well and see’s him whenever they play in the area. For those that are not sure who she is, you can see her video duet with Winger here.
Kip was not onstage long enough. His is now composing music and playing with the passion that made him a huge scuccess back in the day. That passion caused him to break a guitar string during the show. Yes the crowd wanted to hear material from Winger. Kip promised everyone a new Winger album . For now, fans must be content to see him alone on stage with his guitar. If you brush up on your lyrics, he just may invite you onstage to join him this time around.
