On Wednesday, September 28th, Kohl’s launched the Grand Opening of its new Charleston location in the Ashley Crossing Shopping Center.
Their featured item? The Jennifer Lopez Collection!
But, “Jenny from the Block” isn’t the only big name endorsing a reasonably priced fashion line.
Kmart now carries the Sofia Vergara Collection; Sears has The Kardashian Kollection, and Target has teamed up with Missoni.
These highly accessible and affordable fashion lines are welcome retail additions for Charleston mothers. Whether career-oriented, stay-at-home or work-at-home; moms want to look trendy and feel beautiful—two things that multitasking women often struggle to achieve, especially in this tough economy.
Charleston fashion stylist Theresa Spann, known in the industry as The Edge Girl, specializes in helping women achieve chic, fashion-forward looks. As a wife and mother of four, The Edge Girl knows exactly how to be a mom and career woman without sacrificing sassy style.
Charleston Motherhood Examiner caught up with The Edge Girl. She generously agreed to share her expertise in a Fall Fashion Q&A!
Charleston Motherhood Examiner: The new women’s fashion collections at Kohl’s, Kmart, and Sears all carry the names and endorsements of very popular, beautiful celebrities, and Target now carries the designs of Italian fashion house Missoni. What do you think of these A-list celebrities/designers bringing their names and products to these lower-end stores?
The Edge Girl: When Isaac Mizrahi offered his “High/Low End” line at Target years ago, he blazed an amazing trail. Although amazing, it was not an original concept. Major high end fashion designers usually have a lower, less expensive label. For example, Prada’s lower end label is Miu Miu. Bringing these top designers to lower end stores is a wonderful idea. For the designers, they are able to create a few inexpensive pieces that reflect their runway line, and because of the mass production of Kohl’s, Target, and K-Mart everyday women are able to get fashion and quality at a great price. Designers are even mixing their pricey items with their cheaper counterparts at runway shows. They have reported that women can’t tell: they often chose the cheaper items as their favorites! It’s a great mix that all seems to flow together.
Charleston Motherhood Examiner: With these economic trying times, most moms cannot afford to run out and purchase a brand new fall wardrobe. For which fashion “must-haves” should they be on the lookout?
The Edge Girl: No one can ignore the current economic status. Spending our hard earned money should be done wisely. I suggest that this fall’s fashion ‘must-haves’ should be basics that make an outfit. Choose clothes that fit your life. Basic black pencil pants and a camel trench coat are classics that transition well with the right accessories. My advice is to stock up on accessories like over the knee socks, designer tights, and belts that cinch the waist. Animal prints are back. Try a small item like gloves for a sophisticated, yet sexy fall look.
Charleston Motherhood Examiner: Career women have the opportunity to dress the part each day. What key items should all career women have? How can stay-at-home and work-at-home moms achieve stylish looks that are practical for everyday wear?
The Edge Girl: I believe all career women should have a little black dress (LBD). This is one of those items that should be purchased in different fabrics and lengths. That black dress can take you from the office to a late night out on the town. Another good investment would be a classic, tailored white shirt. Paired together, you can never go wrong. For the work/stay-at-home moms that want to remain stylish and practical, I suggest investing in fitted cotton t-shirts, nice flattering jeans or boot cut simple trousers. These will work well with stylish clogs and brightly colored fun socks. Or, keep it simple with some embellished flats. Finally, search for a killer bag that holds your iPad, as well as snacks for the kids. Don’t forget about getting a great haircut that can be pulled back and light fresh make-up.
Charleston Motherhood Examiner: What is this Fall’s hottest fashion trend?
The Edge Girl: There are so many hot trends this fall! Polka dots and animal prints are everywhere! For me, the hottest trend would be the peplums. This style was huge in the 80s, and has returned with a vengeance for fall 2011. Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Victoria Beckham have all been spotted on the red carpet with these sexy ruffles on their hips. I love vintage, so I own a few. With women taking more of an interest in healthy sizes and shapes, they are not afraid to draw a little attention to those hips. Rock it with a pencil skirt, ultra sexy!
