My friend, Elisa Zalopany, just opened her new In Home Lice Removal Business in Orange County called Terminitters (www.terminitters.com). She LOVES her job, she says it’s very rewarding because you have an opportunity to help moms in distress! I am helping her do some marketing for her new service, and I have learned some fascinating facts..
CELEBRITIES GET LICE, TOO! Nothing to be ashamed or embarrassed about. Lice don’t care if you are rich or poor, clean or messy, they don’t discriminate! As a matter of fact lice prefer CLEAN HAIR! It’s easier for them to move and attach their eggs on one clean strand of hair. Some celebrities who have dealt with lice: Shyrkia, Robert Patinson, Madona, Brittany Spears (that’s why she shaved her head!), Kelly Ripa, and Courtney Cox & Coco!
THE MORE POPULAR YOU ARE, THE MORE LIKELY YOU COULD GET LICE! Most common way to get lice is ‘head to head contact’. Girls are much more likely to get lice for 3 reasons: long hair (a convenient ladder to the scalp!), more hugging, and the dreaded SLEEPOVERS! Lice cannot fly, hop, or jump…they can only crawl. They love to lay their eggs close to the scalp, especially at the nape of the neck, and around the ears. So, more popular = more sleepovers and more hugs…= more lice! Yikes!
OVER THE COUNTER LICE PRODUCTS (LIKE RID) ARE NOT EFFECTIVE! They have harsh chemicals that can irritate the scalp, and they don’t kill the nits (eggs). What is effective – a high quality METAL ‘Nit Comb’. (Don’t use a plastic one, they are a waste of time!). There are some excellent organic (non-toxic) products on the market that will ‘loosen’ the eggs, so they can be combed out. You have to get EVERY nit out, by repeating a thorough combout, every few days, for 1 – 2 weeks. The first comb-out can take 1 – 2 HOURS, this is where it’s smart to get a professional ‘nit picker’, like my friend, Elisa. She teaches you how to do proper follow-up comb-outs, to prevent a re-infestation of those little buggers! (Elisa likes a product line called ‘Nit Free’).
YOU WON’T HAVE TO SELL YOUR HOUSE, AND MOVE! It’s a simple process to rid your home of lice. Wash towels, sheets, bedding, and recently worn clothes in HOT WATER. Put pillows, stuffed animals, etc. in a HOT dryer for 30 minutes. Vacuum your carpets, couches, and car seats. Lice will die in about 24 hours, once they are off a human head (You can NOT get lice from pets). They dehydrate quickly, and die.
SOME SCHOOLS HAVE A NO NIT POLICY. ‘No Nit’ means, if the nurse finds even ONE nit (egg), your child won’t be allowed back in class. The adult louse (singular of lice) is the problem, because they can lay 3-5 eggs a day, and live for up to 30 days! THAT is why you need to keep combing with a metal nit comb – to get every nit OUT! A professional, like Elisa, will give you a certificate that will allow your child to be re-admitted to class. Last thing – if you have a flexible spending insurance account, they may reimburse all or part of the cost. (Elisa charges $90/hr., which is competitive. It’s usually 1-1 1/2 hours per person, for treatment. This may seem like a lot of money, but most people are THRILLED to have a professional handle their problem!).
That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. Thanks for reading. I’d love to hear from you!
