Commentary from the liberterrain…
Since No Child Left Behind (NCLB) has had what many consider to be a negative impact on the US education system, the US Department of Education is letting local state education agencies request flexibility in order to better their local education system.
The Dallas Libertarian Examiner asked Collin, Denton, Dallas and Tarrant County Meetup members to comment on this issue.
Unsurprisingly, freedom oriented people had little good to say about the federal education system.
“To me,” one Collin County libertarian responded, “essentially it’s just another example of failed government bureaucracy. Another handful of clowns in a room dictating what’s best for the people of this country.”
The writer then blasted the whole idea of Texans “sending huge checks” to Washington DC, receiving smaller checks in return, and then being judged by the federal government when testing doesn’t meet their burdensome criteria.
Another respondent charged that No Child Left Behind is “a ploy by the unions to not be accountable for poor performance based on nationwide standards.”
The same person added, “The history of No Child Left Behind involves Ted Kennedy looking for a way to send more federal money for schools while Laura Bush and her husband were looking for more accountability for performance.”
According to this narrative, the Democrats have been upset for years because the Kennedy pork spending was cut from the bill “and the teacher unions are being exposed for their incompetence.”
Another libertarian Meetup member had this take on the subject: “A lesser-known provision of NCLB is the mandate that high schools allow recruiting on campus in order to provide cannon fodder for our various illegal wars. I had always thought that No Child Left Behind should more aptly have been called No Child Left Alive.”
Local educators were not invited to comment because it’s virtually guaranteed that their idea of “flexibility” exists firmly within the “government education box.” The purpose of public education is to benefit education bureaucrats, union bosses, school administrators, academics, specialists, staff, teachers, and last but definitely least, parents and the students themselves.
Libertarians see that public education can never be anything other than statist indoctrination. Education should be offered to parents and their children as a non-governmental service in the free market, with a myriad of schools and curricula and educational philosophies all competing with one another.
Education, libertarians know, cannot possibly thrive in a monopoly.
