What’s the purpose behind lathering in slimy dish soap, squeezing into jumbo-sized water skis and then latching onto a boat that’s headed straight for a waxy-water layered ‘launch pad’?
To rocket 240 feet in the air at speeds of 70 miles-per-hour in the dark. It’s all part of the thrill of night ski flying.
In the extreme sporting world it’s not just about having the correct technique or training, but also about being just a little crazy. Just 50 minutes from downtown Tampa, the world’s greatest extreme skiers take to the water in nothing but darkness and glare from floodlights during the World Ski Fly Tour finale, the Rocketman Night Jump.
The finale lands in Florida after touring the country as well as making stops in Australia, London and Madrid. The professional athletes will zip through the air all day during the free event in Polk City Oct. 8. Gates open for the Rocketman Night Jump at 5:30 p.m. and include bikini contests, entertainment, exhibits, and prizes in addition to the women’s and men’s ski fly competitions. The DJ and festivities are set to continue long after the presentation of the World Tour Pit Bull Energy Bar Championship Belt.
Even though night ski flying is relatively young, starting only five years ago, it’s already drawing attention from nutrition companies like, champion belt sponsor, Pit Bull Energy Bar. The makers of the Pomegranate Raspberry, Double Mocha and Cranberry Orange energy bars say the sport is still underrepresented despite its global tours. That’s why they’ve joined the exciting journey to support the athletes in gaining momentum on the water and in the extreme ski sporting world.
Event co-founder and top competitor, Scot Ellis, told fans the night jump was inspired by other pro events like the London Night Jump and the LA Night Jam. He said this is Florida’s opportunity to host one of the world’s best jumps and add additional countries to next year’s tour schedule. There are already athletes from seven different countries competing this year.
