Longwood Gardens has two different types of floral design classes. The first group consists of core courses and electives that are all leading to the earning of their Certificate of Merit in Floral Design. The second group of classes occurs once a month and is designed just for fun, in other words, not to achieve the Certificate of Merit.
Some of those who choose the fun courses are working on their certificates and are using them for practice. Some of those who choose the fun courses already have their certificate and use the class simply to continue designing with instruction at a much lower cost than the regular credit courses. Some of those who choose to take the course are doing it just for something to do. There are almost as many reasons the people have taken the course as there are people taking the course. In other words, if you decide to take a fun course there will be people of all different skill levels taking the same class with you.
Most of these fun classes are given on Friday mornings and are scheduled for 2 hours from 10a – noon. Classes however usually only take from 1 hour to 1 ½ hours depending on the instructor. Every once in a while one of these classes will be moved to Thursday or moved to be an evening class due to the availability of the instructor. The instructors used for these courses are the same instructors used for the regular floral design courses at Longwood.
The classes at Longwood hold only about 24 students, and most become sold out. At the present time all of the December classes in floral design are sold out. Two floral fun classes are still open for this year: October 6, Thursday night from 6:30p – 8:30 and November 11, Friday morning from 10a – noon. From past experience, the October 6 class should sell out in the next day or two and will definitely be sold out by the time the class occurs. The cost of the class is $50 with a discount to $45 for Longwood pass holders. To register and pay for the class you can do so online at:
At this spot online you can also check through the class offering and see what classes are sold out and which ones are still available.
If you don’t like giving out personal information online, you can also register for classes during regular business hours by calling Longwood at 610.388.5454.
