Once in awhile I can drag myself out of bed early enough to eat breakfast somewhere, and was happy to hear that the Maidrite in East Moline served very good breakfasts pretty cheap. Since all the Maidrites seem to be different, in spite of sharing the same name, this is the only one I can vouch for. And their breakfast WAS pretty good.
Cheap – not really, but then, I’m probably flashing back to long ago, when eggs, bacon, toast and juice could be had for $1.99! It’s not that cheap anywhere anymore, even at McDonald’s, but not bad. This morning I had Dad’s Breakfast for $5.99, and it consists of 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon or sausage, hashbrowns, 3 pancakes and toast. Couldn’t finish it all, but it was very good. The eggs were done the way they were ordered, the pancakes were ok, same for the sausages, and the hashbrowns were very good – lots of tender shreds of potatoes with a nice crunchy crust, but none of those unappetizing hard bits.
The breakfast menu is big, and there’s sure to be something for everybody. There’s 3 kinds of Breakfast Burritos for $5.95, and pancakes from $1.99 for one to $5.25 with berries. There’s also various egg skillets from $6.95 to $7.59, omelets at $6.45 to $6.95, and the classic egg combinations from $4.25 to $5.99.
The decor is great, all kinds of ’50s memorabilia, and old-time music. It’s so comfortable – you really feel like you’re actually in an old diner. And although I’m not crazy about chopped meat, I’d like to go back and try some of the specials advertized today, Citrus peppercorn tilapia with a dinner salad for $6.95, and a BBQ ribs basket with sweet potatoe fries, also $6.95.
This Maidrite is located at 689-42nd Ave., East Moline, Ill.
