Kimberley, South Africa – Sept. 29, 2011) – The opening ceremony of the Maloof Money Cup electrified the night Wednesday in Kimberley, South Africa at the just-completed state-of-the-art Kimberley Convention Center Amphitheater. The people of Kimberley and from cities across the Northern Cape showed up in masses to attend the celebration kickoff for the Maloof Money Cup Skateboarding World Championships. The top musical talent in Kimberley, native African dancers, giant 15-foot puppets and a laser and fireworks show dazzled the overflowing crowd of over 3,000. The Deputy Minister of Tourism Tokozile Xasa, Premier of the Northern Cape Province Hazel Jenkins and Joe Maloof spoke to the significance bringing the world’s greatest skateboarding event to Kimberley will have on generations of kids and youth, promoting a new, affordable activity that keeps kids away from crime, cultivating a new generation of skateboarders and putting Kimberley on the world map as an extreme sports destination.
The Maloof Money Cup World Skateboarding Championships begin Friday with the Pro Street Qualifiers and the Pro Vert World Championships and continue through Sunday. A benefit concert Saturday night will be headlined by Grammy-winning artist Lil Jon.

Kimberley Businesses Booming as Thousands of Skate Fans Head to Diamond City for Skateboarding World Championships
(Kimberley, South Africa – September 30, 2011) – Today, the Maloof Money Cup South Africa kicked off in Kimberley with the local South African open qualifier and part one of the Pro Vert World Championships. All 10 pros will compete in the second half of the contest, the Mini Mega ramp, on Saturday with the winner taking home $75,000 cash. Skaters from the Northern Cape competed in the local qualifiers Friday with four skaters advancing to Sunday’s South African Am Street contest.
