Upper West Side resident Ira Mofsowitz is preparing to run his 15th consecutive NYC marathon on November 6th, 2011 and this year he has chosen to support Team for Kids to help New York’s young people discover the joy of fitness. The premier event of New York Road Runners, the ING New York City Marathon is one of the world’s great road races, drawing more than 100,000 applicants annually.
Mofsowitz, a New Jersey native, has lived in NYC for more than 20 years. He became inspired to start running all those years ago when his younger brother, Marc, played football at University of Connecticut and ran marathons to improve his athleticism. “I’m very excited to run my 15th race – nervous, but good nervous,” says Mofsowitz.”I wanted to help others so when I learned about Team for Kids and what the organization sets out to accomplish, I signed up and began to raise funds to help kids who normally wouldn’t have access to the programs they offer,” he explains.
Team for Kids is a committed group of adult runners from around the world who add meaning to their miles by raising funds on behalf of New York Road Runners (NYRR) youth programs and, in return, receive guaranteed entry into premier NYRR events.
Specifically, the funds raised by Team for Kids members help provide:
- Training for teachers, coaches, field managers, and coordinators. Most of these individuals volunteer their time to NYRR youth services.
- Incentives for children to encourage them to attend events and practices, demonstrate sportsmanship, and strive for fitness and personal milestones.
- Entry fees and transportation to races and related sporting events for the kids.
- Needed resources to establish programs in areas of greatest need.
“Ira’s commitment to running 15 NYC Marathons is just unbelievable to me. This year, he’s even gone a step further – to fundraise in support of NYRR Youth Programs. I think he knows that he’s an incredible distance runner, but I hope he realizes how incredible of a person he is,” says Ryan Lee, Team for Kids assistant manager.
“He’s a very important part of NYRR’s movement to fight child obesity and physical inactivity and I hope he has the best race of his life on November 6th,” Lee adds.
All funds raised through Team for Kids benefit New York Road Runner’s youth services. NYRR’s youth services represent a national and international effort to transform the lives of tens of thousands of children, many of whom have no access to the regular physical activity they need to live healthy, productive lives.
