It’s always a surprise to find another good Mexican restaurant in the QCA – we seem to have so many, we’re very fortunate. It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Maria’s, and the food is even better than I remember. Definitely homemade and delicious!
On this visit, we ordered a large combination plate, for only $6.95, and the Enchilada Suiza at $8.95. Along with our meals we recieved a complimentary basket of chips plus salsa. The chips were very good, crispy and thinner than usually found – a basket was finished off in no time! But watch out for the salsa – it sneaks up on you. Spice-y!
All of the food was good, even down to the rice and beans. The enchilada suiza consisted of 3 corn tortillas stuffed with shredded chicken and cheese, then topped with your choice of green or red sauce. Sour cream and guacamole finish it off. The serving size is not large, but they taste great, mild but with a good flavor. The large combo plate had the usual tostado, taco and enchilada, plus rice and beans, and everything tasted homemade and good. The tacos are bursting with meat, and the enchilada, although small, tasted just as good as the chicken.
To top off this meal, we both had fried ice cream, and Maria’s is now my go-to place for this wonderful dessert. It wasn’t huge, which was fine – nobody felt uncomfortable afterwards. And no one felt uncomfortable about the price – $3.50. If you’ve never had fried ice cream, you owe it to yourself to stop in at a Mexican restaurant and try one – that’s the only place you’ll find it. It’s a round ball of ice cream, rolled in crumbs and actually deep-fried. Then it’s place in a small fried tortilla, with honey dribbled on top, then whipped cream. It’s wonderful. And all this good food, plus a large menu of other items, would easily satisfy an Under $10 Diner.
Maria’s is located at 1714 7th St. in Moline, and their phone number is 309-764-5252.
