Recently Hanson Dodge Creative, a Milwaukee based PR Agency and Digital Media firm held an event at Marquette University called PR-Summit (hashtag #PRSMS for those following along on Twitter). The one-day event was special because it featured mega-power Social Media players from Pepsi, North Face, Jockey, GM, IBM and others. In attendance were marketing, technology and public relations executives looking to gain insight and information into the big-player’s Social efforts. Also present were students from Marquette’s various colleges. What made this event so unique is that it combined a student and professional population together for a topic that was timely and engaging for both groups.
Marquette students seeking public relations and communications degrees are neck-deep into Social Media, as that is where the industry is going. Some corporate public relations and marketing professionals are racing to catch up and learn as much as they can so they can apply the knowledge to their daily jobs. The networking opportunities between these two groups were amazing. Hopefully some internships and full-time positions result from the interactions of this awesome event. As an attendee, you could see that the energy from the audience and presenters was tangible.
Social Media is a new frontier for most businesses. Both Marquette and Hanson Dodge are on the cutting edge, blazing a new trail in Social. At a time when unemployment and market conditions weigh heavily on everyone’s mind, it is refreshing to see a top rated university and leading private company come together and create excitement, connections and maybe even a few jobs. The event also raised $25,000 in scholarship money, which was a huge bonus to Marquette.
If you missed the PR-Summit, not to worry, it is an annual event and will be held again in October 2012. Be sure to check out: http://www.prsm-summit.com/
