It just goes to show that you’re never too old for great mind-blowing, life altering sex! And Donna McDonald’s book, Dating a Cougar, is proof of concept.
Alexa Ranger is a 50 year old former model/lingerie designer–a stubborn woman who’s learned the hard way to rely on only one person–herself. Casey Carter is a 38 year old, recently retired and widowed Marine–also stubborn and still military to the core. When these two meet, the attraction is immediate and palpable. Both bring baggage to the relationship, starting with a serious age difference. Surprisingly, the age difference, while a factor, isn’t the heart of the conflict with these two.
Indie author Donna McDonald is a great story teller with a wonderful attention to detail. She kept things paced very well; I never felt as if something was being rushed or something was taking too long to play out. The story kept me riveted, with just enough conflict to make me wonder if this was going to come off or not, but I never reached a point where I didn’t care if it did or not. I never felt as if something was taken for granted that it would happen–a few plot twists along the way kept me guessing.
I liked the way that these two characters stayed true to their core personalities. None of that romantic “I’ll change for you” and the dewy eyed, tumble into bed nonsense. They learn, they adapt, they sizzle, but their core behavior is still the person they start out being. How refreshingly honest and real. I love Alexa because I know women like her–hell, I’m like her, even if I’m not and never will be a model. Fiercely independent, proud of all of the things she’s accomplished, and no reason to be ashamed of any aspect of her life. Would she change things if she could? Sure, wouldn’t we all. But she’s smart enough to know that the total of her experiences is what makes her who she is. Casey is pure Marine from head to toe, complete with the staunch pride, sometimes dictatorial attitude, that comes with it. I may not deal with military types, personally, but there’s something in Casey–he’s wounded in more ways than the physical. And just as determined to win Alexa’s heart. These two are a hoot to watch as they frequently butt heads and have great sex to make up for it.
The sex is there and is not overly graphic. McDonald handles the lovemaking with all of the romance involved but none of the tired, overused cliches. She never backs off from it, but it’s the kind of book you could show your mother and not be ashamed of telling her to read.
This is a great character study in romance and the first of the series. There are a total of four books in the Never Too Late series–Dating a Cougar, Dating Dr. Notorious, Dating a Saint, and Dating a Metro Man. The other three books revolved around Alexa’s two best friends and Alexa’s daughter, Jenna. What a great series and I can’t wait to read them all. I definitely recommend this author and her books to anyone who loves a good romance and likes to laugh. And keep an eye out for more from this wonderful lady.
