I have had the pleasure of modeling for Shemeka Buckner in a few fashion shows and it’s always been a pleasure to work with her! Shemeka is a full-figured fashion genius with a heart of gold. Her line, Kiyoko Linden is VERY creative, colorful, and “fashion forward”. Read on to learn more about this awesome designer.
NY: Hi Shemeka:-)! How are you doing? What’s new?
SB: Hello Nikeya!! I’m doing well…Thanks for asking. Well my clothing line Kiyoko Linden, of course. LOL!!
NY: Tell me about “Kiyoko Linden”. What was the inspiration behind the name?
SB: Where should I start telling Examiner about Kiyoko Linden? Ok. I will start by saying Kiyoko Linden is a premier fashion line designed for the urban trendy full-figured woman plus-sizes 12-26. Kiyoko Linden uses vibrant colors and bold patterned fabrics. It is fashion-forward, sexy, sophisticated and trendy. Our Fashion includes plus-size jeans, plus-size tops, plus-size bottoms, plus size dresses and plus-size denim.
I am always asked “Whats behind the name of Kiyoko Linden?” Well, Examiner will get the first scoop about our name.
I wanted a name that is unique in its own way, something that has a strong meaning that would represent my faith in God. I didn’t want something that was so literally and obvious. So I did research. The Japanese name Kiyoko may be written with the characters for “pure; purify; cleanse” (kiyo) and “child” (ko).
While the name Linden is a type of tree that is known for its ability to develop in urban areas in Europe, eastern North America and Asia.
According to legends, the Linden tree was considered sacred due to the bees desire for them and the quality of the honey produced. The tree was thought to symbolize divine power, love and luck.
So with that being said, Kiyoko Linden means pure, clean child with divine power, love and luck. Is that a AWESOME meaning or what?!
NY: WOW! That’s pretty cool & thanks for sharing Kiyoko Linden’s history exclusively with us:-)! How long have you been a designer?
SB: I had the desires since I was little girl. But my parents said other wise since they were paying my tuition. They wanted me to learn about computers so I studied Graphics Design at Columbia College here in Chicago. I did not start designing until 2001 when I sewn my first pair of PJ’s for a dear friend. So I will say around 10yrs.
NY: What is your vision for the Kiyoko Linden line? Where do you see Kiyoko Linden 5 years from now?
SB: The vision for Kiyoko Linden goes beyond my vision. The vision that was brought to me is having Kiyoko Linden premiering in fashion shows internationally. Kiyoko Linden having flagship stores in major cities such as New York, California, Atlanta, Vegas. Showcasing Bridal wear, home decor, shoes etc. I am standing on crazy faith and I know is SHALL come to pass.
NY: Where can my readers go to purchase your fantastic designs?
SB: Your fabulous readers, can go to our website: www.kiyokolinden.com visit us on facebook/kiyokolinden and twitter @kiyokolinden to get more information about fashion show dates.
NY: You are also being featured in an upcoming show called “Amalgamation” on October 22nd. Are you excited? What can we hope to see from you at that show?
SB: Yes I am very excited Nikeya!! This event is an opportunity for local designers, such as my self to showcase our clothing lines.Amalgamation is produced and organized by Love, Dia which is the headliner for the show. I also like to mentioned that Amalgamation is chosen as one of Chicago’s Fashion Focus events during fashion week!! A portion of the proceeds from Amalgamation will benefit The Red Pump Project, a nationwide effort to promote awareness and prevention of HIV and AIDS in our community, and “Girls Rule!”, which seeks to “establish a safe environment for girls to ‘blend-out’ rather than to ‘blend-in’ as they discover the type of women they would like to become”.
What you will see from Kiyoko Linden remains a secret… LOL!! We can not sew and tell…but you will NOT be disappointed!! You have to come to the show and see what Kiyoko Linden will strut on the runway. Sorry all love in fashion (wink).
