News from the liberterrain
When corporations want vendors to bid on a contract they put out a Request For Quote, or RFQ. So the Dallas Libertarian Examiner sent out RFQs to the Founder and Co-Founder of the Society of Libertarian Entrepreneurs.
Here’s an RFQ response from Co-Organizer Taylor Conant, Guru of SoLE’s Dallas Chapter: “I am an individual interested in personal growth and development and obtaining as much liberty as I can get my hands on! It is my dream to go boldly where no one has gone before in terms of living these principles and sharing first a sense of community with like minds and eventually, an authentic, mass society.”
“Personal growth” and “Like-minded people,” by the way, are constantly recurring memes with this organization.
But Conant’s reply to the RFP doesn’t yield background. So here’s What Los Angeles-based Organizer Tom Garrett had to say:
“In June of 2010 I put up a Meetup page looking to see if there were any of my favorite kinds of people living in LA – libertarians and entrepreneurs. I found a few and then a few more.”
The Dallas chapter was founded in January 2011 but already boasts 60 members, while the national organization’s map shows seven chapters spread over six states.
“Taylor moved to Dallas in late 2009 to work for a hedge fund,” Garrett explained. “We were friends before I started SoLE; as the LA chapter took off Taylor decided to start one up in Dallas.”
And here’s another good Garrett quote: “Taylor knows more about Austrian economics and libertarian philosophy than anyone I’ve ever met – so I call him the guru.”
Garrett acquired the title of Guju, short for Guru Junior.
SoLE should appeal to many flavors of libertarian. The Dallas membership includes well known Texas Libertarian Party activists like Tim Lebsack and Eugene J. Flynn, the national URL www.whoismises.org appears to be a Who is John Galt moment for Austrian Economics maestro Ludwig von Mises, their introductory video includes Atlas Shrugged cover art, and a featured quote is from Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction masterpiece Dune (scratch many a libertarian and you’ll find an SF fan just beneath the surface.)
And the clincher: If you want to start a chapter, Murray Rothbard is required reading.
Meetings are the 4th Monday of every month, and the Facebook page is, what else, www.facebook.com/WhoisRothbard.
