There’s no doubt television is a crazy world today. Shows are canceled before taking a full breath of primetime air and remakes are in an even more competitive world all together! The CW’s 90210 has fortunately been escaping TV’s fast axing shops as the revamp of the original Aaron Spelling hit Beverly Hills 90210. Currently in its fourth season, the show has been a success for the CW and one of its leading men Michael Steger couldn’t be happier. Steger plays Navid Shirazi, a character, that as we discussed in our recent interview, definitely has an interesting storyline this season! I had the pleasure of catching up with Steger to talk his 90210 journey, how he feels about the direction the show is heading in with Navid; as well as the exciting new venture he’s embarked on that he will be sharing with live audiences this November!
How’s the season of 90210 going? You’re doing very well on The CW!
Michael- Yeah, thanks! It’s going really well. We’re on episode ten right now and things have been going really good.
Navid is a little different this season, he has the new job, the writers didn’t have him go into the typical college storyline after high school, and now he’s dealing with illegal matters with work. Do you like the direction he’s in this season or did you prefer he do the whole college thing?
Michael- I’m very excited about the more adult storyline and how they’re making it look. I think it’s interesting with everything he’s dealing with in terms of business and the music. I think it’s a more of a natural progression especially seeing what he went through last season ,and I know eventually he’s going to go to school. He just has to get his things in line.
How is the business going to affect him in terms of his relationships with Silver and his friendships? He has the issues with his uncle that are causing some trouble.
Michael- Well since his uncle is blackmailing him with this whole operation, and Navid knows there’s nothing he can do, he realizes it’s wrong so he takes the money and he puts it to good use. He helps Silver. He’s trying to make the best out of the situation but this whole blackmailing thing has really forced Navid to make irrational decisions. And when he’s playing with dirty money, things are going to come to a dramatic hault. For Navid, this is not an easy situation. There’s a lot that’s going to unfold.
Because he’s known to be a very honest guy.
Michael- Yeah and I think it’s a situation where his friends are being blackmailed and so that’s why he let Silver go from Shirazi’s studios. He’s all about protecting his friends and so in that respect he’s trying to do right.
Are we going to see a lot more of his sister?
Michael- You are going to see a lot more. She becomes more and more of a problem. She’s going to create a difficult time.
The show is in its fourth season now, is there a storyline that really stands out to you with him with everything he’s done?
Michael- I think I really like working with everything he has going on with his uncle because for me it’s such an interesting storyline. It’s a challenge because it’s a change for my character. It’s different.
How would you say you have grown as an actor since your first year on the show?
Michael-I trust myself a lot more. When I started the show I was just a lot more unsure of myself. It’s interesting in the first years you’re really working out the kinks and everything. Now I just feel more comfortable. I’m just a lot more sure of myself coming into set everyday.
Was acting something you always you wanted to pursue? I read you did Martial Arts.
Michael-I’ve always been huge into Martial Arts. That was kind of a hobby. And then how I got into acting was my mom got me involved. I just started doing theater. My brother had an agent in LA, and my mom was like, “You want to act?” And I was like “Yeah!” And she ended up taking me to auditions. I started off very young.
What else are you passionate about? What would you be doing if you weren’t acting?
Michael- I think I would be directing if I wasn’t acting. Directing or writing. Definitely something to do within the entertainment industry.
If you could go back in time and spend a day in the life of anyone from history, who would it be and why?
Michael-I would probably want to relive Paul Scofield’s life. The actor. He’s unbelievable and he lived the most private, private life. I have one biography of his on my shelf and it just kind still doesn’t cover a lot of his personal life. He was a very private person. He just did theater and then he went home and lived a very private life. He was probably one of the finest character actors of the time.
What’s a perfect day like for Michael Steger?
Michael-A perfect day would be to get into the car, drive out to Yosemite and go camping. I love traveling, it’s like my perfect escape.
Any upcoming projects coming up outside of 90210 ?
Michael-I’m producing and directing a one-woman show in November. It opens the first week. It’s called ‘Brandee Built on Crazee’. I’m very excited about it!
