Mike & Molly made its season 2 premiere on Monday, September 26, 2011 on CBS. Even though they kept the laughs going all summer with reruns, fans were ready for the return of new episodes, and Goin’ Fishin’ didn’t disappoint.
The thing about Mike & Molly that makes this show so special is this crazy cast of characters that when mixed together creates utter comedic perfection. The show’s lead couple, played by Billy Gardell and Emmy Award winning actress Melissa McCarthy, is a perfect balance, while their friends and family members bring this incredible kookiness to the mix that just works.
Molly’s sister Victoria, for example, at the start of this series was not someone I was a fan of, yet as season 1 marched on, she grew on me. And now, here we are in the sophomore season and she still brings the unexpectedly enjoyable ditzy funny to the show.
We would be remiss if we ignored the value that Joyce and Vince offer. They are saucy, unfiltered, yet completely loving and supportive in their own boundary-less way. It took time for me to reconcile this character played with no limits by Swoosie Kurtz after having the image of Sisters Alex Reed in mind, but she is hilarious perfection.
To say that Joyce and Vince are going to make wedding planning for the newly engaged couple interesting is probably the understatement of the year.
“Don’t let him drag the engagement out. Guys’ll take a free meal as long as they can get it. And by free meal I mean copulation.” -Vince
“Yeah, and for me, try to avoid the winter months. When my little girl gets married, I want to wear something low-cut; show off my bouncy ‘C’s.” -Joyce
In this first episode of their second season, Molly is eager to begin wedding planning while Mike is content to just be for awhile (though he does secure Carl as his Best Man). But Molly’s a planner and just letting things sit is not exactly her style. Things go comically awry for Mike when he does some talking before thinking in the wee hours of the morning before heading off on a fishing trip with the guys.
Favorite quote of the night came along as the ladies gathered around the breakfast table following that window-shaking argument:
Joyce: “Sweetie, I don’t think those pancakes are part of your diet.”
Molly: [with a withering look] “Do you want to reach over here and try to take them from me?”
Joyce decides that a yoga session is in order to get Molly back to center. It turns out yoga was just what the doctor ordered – especially when Joyce texts Vince pictures of the yoga instructor helping Molly get into the various poses. Let’s just say the pictures were a little frisky looking.
After sinking the boat, sitting around a fire half naked, and receiving the aforementioned pictures…It was time for the guys to turn in their male bonding hats for the day and for Mike to return home and make nice with Molly. As we’ve come to expect it to be in the beautiful land of sitcom heaven, all arguments are forgiven and life is good until the next tiff rolls around.
We didn’t get to see Mike’s mom Peggy in the Mike & Molly season premiere, but no worries, we’ll be seeing her in the second episode of season 2, Dennis’ Birthday. Peggy’s in for a big surprise when she celebrates her boyfriend’s birthday.
