Resident Evil: Afterlife picks right up without a lot of character development or back-story but they really aren’t required. Knowing the story gives a bit of depth to the film but in the end this one can stand alone as a decent zombie flick without knowing the entire history. That said, the plot was a bit thin and somewhat repetitive for the series despite some good action and lots of zombie killing fun.
Acting was about what we have come to expect from this franchise although Jovovich is starting to look a bit bored with the part and just doesn’t feel like the superhero she did in the beginning. Larter, Coates, and the remainder of the cast did pretty well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good but again feel a bit tired compared to previous episodes. Action was good however the slow-motion bullet dodging was a bit overused and elementary feeling. Action scenes were otherwise fairly well done. Dialogue was light and lacked serious depth while sound and soundtrack were good enough.
Overall Resident Evil: Afterlife is a fairly well done zombie flick but really doesn’t do much or the Resident Evil franchise or the series plot. Those who enjoy zombie flicks for the zombies will probably enjoy this the most while everyone else will feel it lacks depth.
With plenty of violence, disturbing images, and foul language this should be fine for older teens and above.
Resident Evil: Afterlife is no longer showing in any Littleton, Colorado movie theatres.
