While riding the subway one day Zach, a teen who loves horror films, is attacked by vampires on a deserted platform but saved by Valentine, a supposed vegetarian vampire. Zach is entranced by Valentine’s world and enjoys his protection below ground but hesitates when Valentine asks to be led aboveground, as he can be only by an innocent such as Zach. But when Gabe, one of Zach’s friends, is kidnapped Zach realizes he doesn’t have a choice.
Ron Silver (Valentine), Chauncey Leopardi (Zach), Natanya Ross (Gabe), Tony Johnson (JT), Sherry Miller (Mom), Wes Craven (Counselor), Linda Carter (Ms. Potasher), Ron White (Sims).
This one starts off slow with a fair amount of character development and never really builds any momentum until right at the end. It just felt like the plot spun its wheels for quite a while before we realized where it was going and by then it had turned into an After School Special. After about the third time Valentine saved Zach we begin to wish the vampires would win and the kid would get eaten just to spice things up and push the plot in a new direction.
Ron Silver actually delivered pretty well in this one but sadly, he had no supporting cast and it just wasn’t enough to save the film. Not that the kids didn’t do well, they just didn’t have the experience needed to convey their characters.
What special effects are used aren’t half bad considering the age of the film however, vampire effects were pretty lame. Sets were nicely done, particularly the old subway scenes. Camera work was a mixed bag with some good shots and some tiresome shaky action scenes meant to convey terror. Sound was lacking with difficulty hearing Silver when he talked low and high effects sounds.
Overall not a bad movie but this one will definitely appeal more to the younger crowd or those less exposed to vampire flicks. The whole moral-of-the-story bit at the end was a bit overdone but again would appeal to younger viewers. Some mild violence and scary vampires so save this one for teens and above.
With some mild violence this one should be fine for teens and above.
