St. Mary’s women have been handed a lesson from their I-35 rivals and conference leaders St. Mary’s losing 5-0 on Thursday afternoon.
Despite the loss St. Mary’s should still qualify for the conference tournament assuming the Heartland Conference runs it the way it ran the last tournament way back in 2005, with the Rattlers sitting comfortably in third place, and now unable to climb any higher.
It was clear that the gap between first and third in the conference was broad as St. Edward’s dominated the early proceedings, Paula Ostros being called in to action on a number of occassions. It was no surprise then, that in the 13th minute St. Edward’s had the lead after a great cross from Olivia Collado was volleyed into the net by Kelly Servage.
St. Edward’s continued to dominate the proceedings with Bethany Bennett proving a vital part of the team, sending in the corners, which were won at a rapid rate. Rachel Murray shot wide on the half hour mark but was able to redeem herself just 30 seconds later as she stole the ball from the Rattlers defense and scored from the edge of the area. Less than a minute later Murray had a brace, as Kelly Davis sent her through allowing Murray to score two in the space of 51 seconds.
St. Edward’s had one more attacking chance in the half, which was blocked as the half ended 3-0 to St. Edward’s.
It didn’t take long in the second half for Murray to get her hattrick as Servage turned to provider, sending a nice throughball for Murray to go one-on-one with the keeper and score simply in the 51st minute.
St. Edward’s weren’t content with 4-0 and the continued to attack, only to be denied by some desperate defending from St. Mary’s with a number of blocks denying the St. Edward’s attackers.
Late on St. Edward’s earned a number of corners, only to be denied by some splendid keeping from Ostros. The corners finally paid off right at the death as Katie Orkild’s 85th minute corner was well met by the head of Kristen Hart to hand St. Edward’s a 5-0 win.
