It’s a dark, moonless Halloween night. The wind howling, banging tree branches on your window, casting long dark shadows that seem to inch towards you. Your cat on your lap, sitting motionless, staring at a dark corner when you feel a cold sensation running from your neck down your spine. All is still. All but your own heart, thumping at what feels like a thousand beats per minute. You work up the courage to snatch your blanket from your side, holding it with a strong grip. You feel a tug. The tug strengthened to a steady strain — it grew stronger and stronger. Your hold slips, and the blanket slid away. A faint figure can be made out from the corner of your eye! Beaded drops of sweat stood upon your forehead. The figure wandered through the dismal corridors…you have a visitor. When everything was still once more, you reach for the nearest candle; strike a match to bring it to life. You glance up, meeting eye to eye with your guest…
WTF WHY U PLAY IN THE DARK NOOB LOL.
“Goddammit Carl I forgot you were here.”

5) Bioshock, Irrational games (then 2k Boston), 2007.
Bioshock is set in the 1960s in an underwater city, Rapture. Created by Andrew Ryan to promote a society in which the goal was to avoid the oppression of science and religion. The black market led to the discovery of a sea slug that when its stem cells were cultivated, they could be used to create ADAM; a plasmid that could alter a user’s DNA and grant them powers, such as telekinesis and the ability to shoot fire.
SCARY MOMENT: The first time you come face to face with a Big daddy, a mutated human whose skin is grafted to a giant metal diving suit with a drill attached to their arm.
4) Half Life series, Valve 1998
Most of the game takes place in a remote lab in New Mexico. You are Gordon Freeman, physicist at Black Mesa research facility. Here you become witness to a horrifying experiment gone wrong in which there is a dimensional tear that introduces a spew of parasites. His journey has him scouring black mesa for survivors while evading head crab ridden scientists & black ops soldiers, making his way to a location that may hold to key to fix the mayhem.
SCARY MOMENT: Turning a corner then having a head crab lunge and attach itself to you.
3) Left 4 dead, Valve 2009.
Imagine being placed in a world infested with the living dead that not only are they after your delicious brains, but they also attack in hordes running at full speed. Armed with guns, maybe some med kits, pipe bombs, and 3 other strangers, your goal is to get to the next safe house that will eventually lead to an evacuation point. The sequel introduced melee weapons and a new cast.
SCARY MOMENT: The music when a tank shows up. Also, the witch.
2) Silent Hill series, Konami 1999
Silent hill is a survival horror series that are set in 2 dimensions: reality and a monster-filled alternate dimension whose form is based on the fictional rural American town of Silent Hill and which are uninhabited by people. One of these dimensions is shrouded by fog; the other, known as the “Otherworld” is filled with dilapidated buildings and odd, physically and psychologically twisted creatures. The original game features Harry Mason whose mission is to find his missing adopted daughter. He discovers a hidden cult who is trying to summon a dark deity. Harry discovers his daughter’s true origin. There are also 5 possible endings, each resulting depending of your in game actions.
SCARY MOMENT: The radio crackle as a creature approaches from somewhere in the dense fog.
1) Dead Space series, visceral games (then EA Redwood), 2008.
This third person survival horror title follows Isaac Clark, an engineer, who answers a distress call from the USG Ishimura, a “planet cracker” (a ship that mined large portions of planets for their resources) along with his crew. Once they board they discover the gruesome end of its crew and are then introduced to Necromorphs. These are the reanimated bodies of the dead crew members that host parasites that cause its host to spawn giant blades. This is brought on by the discovery of an ancient relic that the ship’s captain, who was a follower of the church of Unitology, was after on Aegis VII. Later the organisms that would later form the necromorphs overran the ship, which then led to the crews demise. Since Isaac Clark is an engineer his weapons are mostly comprised of mining tools. The only way to defeat the necromorphs was with a combat mechanism called strategic dismemberment. This just another way of saying “just cut their arms & legs off”. What this game did well was creating tense moments in which there was no sound, shadows running in front of you & seeing nothing once you turn around, and sometimes you could only hear your breathing and you heart beating.
SCARY MOMENT: Walking down a dark corridor with corpses littered all around, only to have one come to life after you walk past it and latch onto you.
