KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI–The mystery surrounding the disappearance of 11 month old Lisa Irwin of Kansas City took another unexpected turn Monday when surveillance video was made public which appears to show a mystery man emerging from the woods near the home from which baby Lisa disappeared.
The baby allegedly disappeared from her crib during the night on the evening of October 3rd. The infant’s mother, Deborah Bradley, has been under an umbrella of suspicion since she reported the child missing. After initially claiming that she put the child to bed at around 10:30, Bradley changed her story, stating that she put the baby to bed at 6:40 because the child was “fussy”. Bradley also admitted to being drunk on the night the infant disappeared.
Since the baby was reported missing, police have sought help from the public in the hopes of obtaining clues that may lead them in the direction of the missing child. During the course of the investigation, several residents who are local to the area have come forward to state that they saw an unknown man walking near the home that baby Lisa disappeared from late that same night and that the man was carrying a baby.
According to the witnesses, the baby appeared to be wearing nothing but a diaper, despite the cold evening temperature. The witnesses claim that the man appeared to be in his late 30’s to early 40’s and was wearing a short sleeved t-shirt, pants and no coat.
One witness that police have questioned, Mike Thomas, said that he saw the man at around 4:00 a.m.on October 4th as he was on his way home. “[It was] 4 o’clock in the morning, 45 degrees, the baby don’t have a blanket or coat or nothin’, and this guy’s walking down the street,” Thompson said. “I thought it was kind of weird.”
A female witness, who’s name has not been disclosed, also claimed to have saw the mystery man and told ABC news, “It was shocking because I couldn’t imagine anybody outside walking with their baby in the cold like that with no clothes on”.
Surveillance video has surfaced from a local gas station located just blocks from the baby’s home that appears to show a man fitting the witness’s description emerging from a secluded wooded area shortly after 2:30 a.m. The man does not appear to fit the description of baby Lisa’s father, Jeremy Irwin, who claims to have discovered the child missing from her crib shortly after arriving home from work at around 4:00 a.m.
According to Irwin, he arrived home to find the lights on throughout the house, the child’s mother asleep in bed and the baby missing from her crib, but the couple’s two boys asleep in their beds, undisturbed. Irwin claimed that after waking Bradley, the couple realized that the child was gone and immediately notified police.
Former FBI agent Brad Garrett, however, doubt’s the relevance of the sightings and, when interviewed by ABC news stated, “Are you going to logically abduct a child, let’s say in the midnight area, then two to four hours later, you are spotted in the proximity of the neighborhood,” he said. “I mean, that doesn’t make any sense. It could be true, of course, but the logic of abducting a child is so you can take the child to some other location.”
Documents which were released on Friday disclosed that, during the course of the search of the couple’s home, search dogs picked up the scent of human decomposition in the bedroom occupied by the baby’s parents. Attorneys for the parents have downplayed that revelation, however, despite the fact that the infant’s parents are no longer cooperating with police.
Local police and F.B.I. agents are expected to continue following up on leads this week.
