October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 2011 is celebrating 25 years of awareness, education, and empowerment. The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was founded in 1985 mainly to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer. It has become an annual international health campaign organized by the major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
The pink ribbon campaign began 1n 1993 when Evelyn Lauder, Senior VP at the Estee Lauder Company, founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and initiated the pink ribbon to use as a symbol.
October is now well known for Breast Cancer fundraising:
Global Illumination: During the month of October watch for your favorite buildings, monuments, and landmarks to be illuminated in pink light in order to draw attention to the importance on mammography screening along with the research needed to find a way to cure and prevent breast cancer.
Pink Days: During October money is raised to donate to fighting Breast Cancer by people organizing pinked themed parties and activities.
Susan G. Komen 3 Day “For the Cure” Walk: Occurring in several cities across the United States, this is a 60 mile, 3 day, fundraising walk to raise money for breast cancer research.
The Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure: This is the world’s largest breast cancer fundraising event. The Race for the Cure was started in 1983 in Texas and renamed the Susan G Komen Global Race for the Cure in 2009. The “race” consists of 5K runs and fitness walks in order to raise money and awareness. Three-quarters of the net proceeds from the event are used locally to pay for community outreach programs, breast health education, and breast cancer screening and treatment projects run by the Komen affiliate. The remaining quarter is sent to the central organization.
Many stores participate with their own pink ribbon campaigns to raise funds for screening and to find a cure. Every year we see pink clothing, jewelry, and ornaments to purchase in order to bring awareness and raise fund for the cause.
There are now furniture designers and companies getting involved. You can purchase great furnishings during the month of October while contributing to this worthy cause:
Furniture for the Cure has unique furnishings designed specifically to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer.
“Furniture for the Cure™ offers a tangible way to express those unseen sentiments with pieces that are symbolic, yet functional and beautiful. Each piece will be named for someone who has triumphed over cancer, or for someone whose battle ended, but inspired those around him or her.
Each piece brings together the elements of those who have been affected by cancer, along with the signature awareness ribbon for an overall look that is both beautiful and functional. Each element has been selected for its visual allure and its symbolism:
Plantation mahogany wood for strength
Silverleaf or brushed nickel for quiet beauty
Stone reflecting the individuality of each person
Together, they create a piece of furniture whose meaning to its owners is unique.” (quoted from their website)
The Breast Cancer Site Store has a varied assortment of items. Along with clothing and jewelry they have a full array of décor items including mirrors, rugs, pillows, artwork, and accents. Every purchase goes to fund mammograms for women in need.

Pink ribbons do not mean that all of the items are necessarily pink. There are many companies finding innovative designs and ways to give to the cause without being overtly feminine. Men need to be aware that they should be screened for breast cancer as well.
Unfortunately every person in the world has been touched in some way by breast cancer. Fortunately through awareness and research we are getting closer to finding a cure. If every individual takes their part in this fight, we will win the war on breast cancer and all other cancers.
Fight for a good cause, have a pink party and get your friends involved. Take the initiative and never be afraid to dance!
