September 1, 2011 sees the launch of National Yoga Month. Yoga is a philosophy that begins you on a journey to unite the mind, body, and spirit. This is achieved through precise movement, breathing techniques, and meditation. Focusing on only one school of yoga (Hatha yoga) that is most commonly practiced for exercise and health, we will look at some of the benefits the practice of yoga has on your skin.
Yoga aids in the release of toxins, increases circulation, increases flexibility, builds strength, facilitates the movement of joints, and reduces stress. But what has this to do with your skin? The increased circulation from performing the asanas (yoga poses) and the pranayama (breath control) aids in the release of toxins within your body. Your skin, as a part of your excretory system, releases those toxins. When performing inverted asanas you are bringing circulation to your face (for a rosy glow) and your are reversing gravity which may help with wrinkles and give you a natural lift. Increasing flexibility, specifically in the neck and back, will release pressure in those areas that could be causing headaches or stress lines. Once that pressure is reduced your face can look more relaxed. Relaxing the entire body aids in reducing stress giving you an overall feeling of health, which is reflected in your skin. Less stress allows you to sleep better and being well rested is also reflected in your skin. Dark circles, bags under the eyes, dull skin, and stress lines (pursed lips, narrowed eyes) can all be reduced with the daily practice of yoga.
