The Michigan Nationals 99 Pee Wee AA team had four games over the weekend in west Michigan, picking up a pair of wins and two ties. On Saturday, they faced Compuware 99 AA and managed to tally a shutout, winning 3-0. Later in the day they played a league game against another west Michigan opponent, the Grand Rapids Griffins 99 AA squad.
GRAHA struck first, scoring in the first half of the first period. The Nats tied it up with 2:51 left in the period off of a shot by Hunter Jamieson, then gave up another goal trying to kill a tripping penalty when a Griffins slapshot from the point found its way to the back of the net. The Nats killed an illegal check penalty to finish the period 1-2.
Early in the second period, the Nats put in a power play goal of their own resulting from a hooking call, when Blake Siewertson scored. Another penalty by the Griffins was successfully killed. The Nats also drew a minor, making it 4 on 4, and GRAHA put in another goal. A checking penalty for Grand Rapids made it a 5 on 3 for 55 seconds, but Holland was not able to capitalize on the opportunity with a goal. The game was tied again when center Reidar Burgeson chucked a loose puck off of the wall and beat two defenseman to score unassisted off of a top-shelf backhand. The period ended with the score tied 3-3.
The Nats killed another penalty to start the third period, then had a power play of their own from a tripping penalty. Another tripping call on the Nats (this seemed to be the most popular call of the day for the officiating staff) resulted in a beautiful tipped-in goal by Grand Rapids to take the lead in the game, 4-3. The Nats didn’t go down quiety, with Siewertson scoring once again to end the game in a 4-4 tie.
Grand Rapids and Holland met again on Sunday in a non-league game, and once more tied with a score of 1-1. The two teams have tied all three times they met this season, in what has to be an almost statistically impossible outcome. The Nats also played the Cleveland Warriors on Sunday, winning by a score of 7-1. Their record for the weekend was 2-0-2, and their overall record is 14-3-3 for the season.
