Yesterday we had the opportunity to participate in a moderated conference call with NBA 2K12’s producer, Erick Boenish as well as senior gameplay designer, Mike Wang who took the opportunity to answer a few questions about the game, which will be hitting stores next week.
During the call questions were answered that ranged from the NBA Greatest Mode, My Player Mode and The Association Online as well as details about the tweaks made to the controls and gameplay to make the game a little easier to play. One thing that was interesting to hear was how the dev team seemed to butt heads a bit after the 15 legends were chosen when it came down to choosing the opposing teams, which I was very happy about since the Muggsy Bogues/Larry Johnson “Grandmama” era Hornets are my favorite team (don’t worry CP3 and David West I still love the current Hornets).
Other interesting notes from the call included a discussion on how different the legend’s games look for each era, such as the black and white picture and crackling audio of the Bill Russell game or the pastel color looking games during the Jerry West game. It seems the dev team definitely did quite a bit of research to come close to matching everything from the signature shots and look of the different era players, right down to the short shorts we were all happy to see go. We will even have the opportunity to see different versions of many of the legends, bald and goggled Kareem or afro Kobe anyone? Players will have the opportunity to unlock 34 classic teams to use in the game against the 30 current NBA teams, which should make for a lot of exciting match ups.
My Player Mode was a big feature for this writer, being able to create my own character and work my way up through the currents ranks was enjoyable and some of the decisions made for this year seem interesting. Along with being able to create your own type of jump shot players won’t have to go through the combine and the summer league, instead they can now participate in a “Rookie Showcase”, one game with all of the rookies as well as interviews with GMs that will decide where players will end up. Another interesting choice is that players will no longer have to play every game, which can drag on; instead they want players to be able to play their entire career and possibly even make it into the Hall of Fame.
Lots more was discussed during the call, including gameplay, A.I. improvements, the addition of Steve Kerr to the announce team and other features, even a hint on how to beat the Miami Heat if you’re having trouble (try and take advantage of the rest of the team instead of going toe to toe with LeBron and Wade). You can listen to the call yourself HERE and for more information about the game you can visit the Official Site.
Basketball fans can expect to see NBA 2K12 in stores October 4th, 2011. If you would like to purchase it locally here are the listings for some of the game stores in the Las Cruces and Albuquerque areas.
