I still remember the day I got my driver license from the West LA DMV on my 16th birthday. As I slipped behind the wheel to drive home, my mom ruined the whole experience by remarking, “It’s getting foggy, let your father drive.” I subsequently persevered, aided by my dad’s intervention, and drove home without getting into a fatal accident. All parents worry when their teens are out on the road unsupervised; however, those that opt for the sporty new Hyundai Veloster can have their apprehension assuaged. Without having to ride along with their teen, they can be apprised of whether the novice driver is driving too fast, exceeding the curfew, or wasting gas. The Speed Alert feature notifies the parent via e-mail, text message or automated phone message when the vehicle exceeds the specified speed threshold established on the owner’s website. The Curfew Alert notifies the parent if the vehicle is being used outside a pre-determined time interval. Alerts are configured online and sent via text message and/or automated phone message. The Eco-Coach helps the teen improve the environment and fuel economy while having a little friendly competition. The “Blue Max” program measures the car’s fuel economy every 10 minutes and displays a score. It posts the results along with other Veloster drivers’ to the Blue Link Owner’s Website. Depending on one’s performance, it offers customized driving recommendations that can help you eke out more miles from every gallon. The screen also displays the car’s location, onboard entertainment, and telecommunications.
Other way-cool features include Blue Link features:
- Location Sharing: It allows you to share the vehicle’s location with friends and followers on select social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter—directly from the vehicle.
- SOS Emergency Assistance: By pressing the dedicated SOS button, specially trained response specialists receive vehicle information and location and send appropriate emergency assistance. The response specialist remains on the line until assistance has arrived.
- Points of Interest Search and Turn-by-Turn navigation: For vehicles that are not equipped with an on-board navigation system, this powerful tool can help one find points of interest ranging from a specific address for a known location to general searches like “sushi” or “live music.” Once a point of interest is selected, both a map and turn-by-turn audible directions are provided by Blue Link.
Other Veloster features to keep the teen driver safe are six airbags, Vehicle stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist.
