The new Atlanta youth hockey season is upon us and both players and parents can be seen displaying on their faces the excitement and exuberance of a new and promising season.
We are in the midst of huge changes including the change of the Junior Thrashers to the Phoenix, the end of our affiliation with the Atlanta Thrashers who are now the Winnipeg Jets, and the miraculous resuscitation of inline rinks in Alpharetta and Woodstock.
Yes the smell of the ice….the sound of blades cutting the ice surface or the screech of roller blades making a hard stop are sounds we have become accustomed to. And …the return of the crazy hockey parents!
As quiet as it is kept dedicated normal hockey parents have now begun to remember what irritates them when they bring their children to the rink to play the fastest game on earth.
Crazy hockey parents in Atlanta have been documented timing the playing times of their child’s teammates and quoting them to the coach comparing them to their own child’s, scrutinizing equipment and talking negatively about other kids on the team.
No joke, hockey is a passionate and competitive sport.
Other crazy hockey parents examples include those who regularly “boo” children and verbally abuse them when they are exiting the ice surface after a game.
I know everyone can cite a parent who regularly back bites and undermines the coach who is devoting his time without pay to coach their children.
In a suburban rink in Chicago, Illinois multiple families have been barred from rinks for jumping over the boards and engaging in fights with parents from opposing teams and referees.
These hockey parents had their names professionally posted as “Banned from rink forever.”
Most of us understand the emotion that hockey games can command but in recent years we have gone to an entirely different level.
Last season I wrote about a hockey mom who pulled up her shirt to reveal her breasts during a youth hockey game.
I am still not sure what the effect of that action was supposed to be but it did get her a ton of publicity.
In a unusual example of unintentional one-upmanship a hockey mom in California
has been accused of having sex with her son’s teammate.
In a recent story in USA Today a 44 year old hockey mom was arrested and charged with having unlawful sex and committing lewd acts with members ( that’s more than one) of her son’s hockey team.
Maria Davis, of Laguna Niguel, California allegedly hosted several sleepovers with the hockey team and provided alcohol to members of the team.
Davis’ neighbors say they are surprised to hear about this news.
“She’s super friendly, really outgoing and nice,” said neighbor Elizabeth Willey. “I’ve chatted with her a couple of times and I’m shocked to hear that.”
Davis was released on $25,000 bail. She is divorced with children.
The operator of the Anaheim rink where the team plays encouraged other parents not to worry.
“It’s shocking,” said Masha Ladonia. “This doesn’t happen. I don’t want parents to worry about this happening with their children because I don’t think this is common.”
We hope not !
Well one thing is for certain and that is the new season has begun and we can expect that we will see still more examples of “crazy.”
Hopefully none of our parents will make national headlines.
We have had enough bad hockey news from Atlanta haven’t we?
