Nintendo’s recent release of the ten NES game downloads for those who purchased their Nintendo 3DS system prior to the recent Nintendo 3DS price drop given on September 1st, also known as Ambassadors, makes one wonder if they truly made up for the extra 80 dollars many cashed in to obtain this latest handheld before anyone else. There are still ten Game Boy Advanced games for us to receive before the end of the year but are these first titles worth half of that price drop? It is a hard question to answer for many but this gamer girl says with a sad face, no. The games are worth much in their original cartridges to those who still own an NES, such as yours truly, but it is doubtful that these games will be played time and time again the way they once were.
In the e-mail sent to each Ambassador, within the Nintendo 3DS console, prior to the release of these games, Nintendo specified that those who are Ambassadors may download any of the ten free games at no charge including updated versions. One could read too much into this bit of information and say that the games may be rereleased later on as 3D classics or maybe with added features such as better playing manuals, local or Street Pass gameplay for games that would apply, or even a small comic that helps tell the story that we were forced to put together in our minds so long ago. If this were the case then the games are worth it. However, as the games are now, true to their classic nature, it is difficult to say if we are fairly being compensated for our devoted loyalty to Nintendo.
Half of these games are well known throughout the gaming world, even outside of it, and titled as some of the best on-going franchises of all time. The other half would only be recognized by either gamers who played the originals during their cartridge or became big fans of the NES through the Virtual Console on the Wii. The only thing that seems bothersome is that they are obviously a product of their time and have little to no replay value unless you are a true hardcore gamer or big fan of these games. Nostalgia will consume most who receive these ten free gifts from Nintendo but that feeling does not last when one can complete all ten games in two days time, or less, if you wish to relive those wonderful moments when you saved Princess Peach from Bowser, defeated Ganon and saved Zelda, or saved Donkey Kong from Mario’s clutches. You must ask yourself if you hunger for more or if satisfaction has left its mark.
Nintendo has touched this girl’s heart by sending her these ten classic games due to her deep love for Mario and company but not enough to say that she feels complete satisfaction. The second list of Nintendo’s Ambassador Program is the one that has caught this girl’s gaming eye and cannot wait for them to arrive. She is hungry for more!
