Let’s play word association…I say Hussein Chalayan…words like innovative, architectural, mechanical, unwearable, talented, theatrical and esoteric… come to mind and that’s for starters.
Well, it’s a new day and new season and apparently this designer has decided to harness his talents and redefine his approach to doing a collection. He has taken the approach that clothes should be worn as well as admired and exalted for all the “blah blah blah” to which I so often refer.
From the initial exit onto the runway, you just knew something was about to happen and happen it did. Mr. Chalayan delivered a collection that will prove to be a pivotal moment for him, his company and his career. The collection retained much of the signature DNA and vocabulary of M. Chayalan but what was added was an aspect of being far more commercial. Some may say it is a cop out, I say it is god business and very savvy of him at this time in the fashion business as his clothes are not of “me too” variety and they are feminine and they are distinctive without being unapproachable.
The floating panels, the prints, the cut outs, the transparencies all played against the shapes which speak to a customer as they are familiar and not scary. In the past, one would have been hard pressed to ever say that Hussein Chayalan followed a trend and yet I can say that today. And I can say it without being catty!!
This is the last stop on the fashion train. Paris is where ideas are formed and trends begin. This is where Macy’s, H&M, Zara, Forever 21 get their inspirations for next Spring. Paris collections will also be the where the big boys like Bergdorf Goodman, Saks, Barneys, Jeffrey and Bloomingdale’s find their “designer collections “ as well their “modern and advanced” collections for this coming Spring season..
