“So this is Christmas, and what have you done?”
— from John Lennon’s Happy Xmas (War Is Over)
Groping for identity with the OWS squatters lately has not garnered a lot of political punch for the man who would be king. So, Barack Obama has revisited his bygone days of manic popularity to make good on an old campaign promise hoping to bind his liberal base together and give them something to chant about.
Yes, apparently, we will be pulling out of Iraq by the end of the year instead of easing into a methodical withdrawal beginning later next year. There is apparently no upside in putting off the politically convenient abandonment of the Iraqis and it then becoming a presidential distraction once his juvenile mudslinging campaign is in full swing. Better to get it over with now and hope the situation doesn’t deteriorate before November 2012.
If Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is shrewd, he will make no overt power play for the time being and go to Allah in prayer for Obama’s re-election. But as a remarkable result of the ill advised withdrawal, it is being rumored that the Iranian leader now believes in Santa Claus.
Meanwhile, our struggling president’s navigation through foreign policy, a joke ever since his campaign idea to come to the table and make nice with Iran without conditions, have made him the laughable dummy to Ahmadinejad whose sole will is to expand his nation’s territoriality. As vacuum after mideast government vacuum makes itself available (with all the dirty work accomplished by internal masses in need of organization and direction), each is ripe for disaster. Indeed, with a literal sidekick like Obama, Iran need not fire a shot in easing its way into better striking distance of Israel and other US interests.
Take Egypt (come to think of it, they did). Obama spurned Hosni Mubarak, its president of 30 years and perennial US ally, if not the greatest of world leaders – we should talk – basically rooting from the comfort of the White House for the upheaval that resulted in Mubarak stepping down. No one knows where this will lead, least of all our president who, by his own self-esteemed intellect, steps in hole after hole in his blind search for world praise.
But if it is any sign, the Coptic Christians in that country (probably the oldest organized Christ-believing body in the world) have had churches burned down and been attacked in a deadly massacre by Muslim extremists when they dared to protest at a television station. You can do the math on the upcoming discord; Obama already thinks it’s mission accomplished there.
In Syria, any demonstrators (as in Iran) are not afforded as much civil respect or tolerance, and as a result of their rebellion, at least 3,000 citizens have been killed by tanks and snipers under President Bashar al-Assad while thousands of others have been injured and/or detained. Obama joined NATO with the obligatory verbal condemnations, but in his heart of hearts, he wanted to start a war somewhere else.
Enter Libya’s rebels who wanted to end the long reign of Moammar Gadhafi, a bad guy to be sure, although he had been pretty quiet after Reagan sent seven F-111 bombers on a historic raid of his compound in the 80s, and very cooperative after George W Bush went into Iraq and extracted or killed the entire Hussein heirarchy (after which Gadhafi voluntarily came clean on his WMD programs). Libya looked like easy pickings for a US president who had become intoxicated by the elixir that brings instantaneous, though fleeting, aplomb when you carry out a successful military operation abroad, as in bin Laden’s termination.
Leading from behind in what was to be just a matter of days, Obama finally got to see the tyrant of Tripoli captured and killed after months of tentative and expensive bombing plus the material support to NATO, an entity which has lost its identity since its creation.
Now, Iraq. Contrary to Obama’s version that this is a mutually agreed arrangement with Nouri al-Maliki, Iraqi leaders want a continued US presence as a check on Iran. But Obama needs what votes he can still squeeze out of whatever ideological ilk. So now Iran gets an early Christmas card from the resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue with the added sentiment “Happy New Year, she’s all yours”, the natural by-product of his carelessness with mideast lives – dabbling, then losing interest, in them after one more droning speech about the dreams and individualism born of the Arab Spring.
But not to worry, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham warned Tehran not to misinterpret the early withdrawal and try to undermine or do anything foolish in regard to their next door neighbor. Imagine the absolute fear that must have gripped those Iranian leaders who had already plotted to assassinate a Saudi ambassador on American soil, collateral damage be damned. Have we sent that mean follow-up letter yet?
And now it is announced by Afghan President Hamid Karzai that his country would join Pakistan if the latter were to war against the United States. Does Obama have a way with Muslim leaders or what? And Israel, the only true ally, is probably in more grave danger now than ever before in the history of their nation – not because of terror-sponsoring government heads in their region, but because of a naive executive on our shores who chides and insults them at every turn.
Where Jimmy Carter’s policy in the Cold War with the USSR was containment (his lines in the sand being constantly re-mapped while waving his finger at their communist-in-chief), Barack Obama’s policy is one of accommodation – an unwitting ascent for a new Cold War with Iran, a country Carter couldn’t handle either by the way. Worse, unlike our former Russian foes, we soon face a nation whose zealots are more in love with mythical afterlife virgins than they are with the own real life children, making them much more irrational and dangerous.
The one seems to think that by not addressing the domestic issues and economic flatline of our nation anymore (aside from his “pass this jobs bill”) and instead concentrating his energies on things abroad, he can parade around some new imagined success (indeed a figment of his boundless imagination).
The pretender in the Oval Office is in way over his head, and the world situation is getting uglier by the minute. Iran races unimpeded toward completion of their nuclear weapons program, and the new Cold War looms – a natural result of Obama’s cavalier unpreparedness and folly.
