Occupy Chicago is on their fifth day of protest and growing. The same can be said of other movements across the country. What started out as a seemingly disjointed group of individuals is not congealing into a very powerful group with a clear message. We are the 99% and we will not allow the Greed of the 1% to continue. This includes but is not limited to challenging the Supreme Courts’ decision to allow unlimited contributions to candidates by corporations, and the reinstatement of Glass-Steagall, which was a Depression Era regulation designed to prevent another market crash.
Our current government has become a form of Corporate Despotism and not a true Democracy. In this case, 1% of Americans are making the majority of the rules. Since corporations can contribute to political campaigns, they exert an inordinate amount of influence over the legislative process. It has effectively reduced the average citizen’s voice down to a whisper. The politician when faced with reelection can either bend to the will of the corporations, who are funding his or her campaign and lie to the American public, or they can decline and risk losing their position, the perks, power, status and benefits that come with being a politician. They will rationalize the decision by telling themselves if they aren’t elected they can’t do good things either.
This is the way it has been for decades and we, the American public, have been buying it hook, line, and sinker. It is time for an Awakening. No one else is going to fix our problems for us. We cannot rely on politicians to do it. There is no great leader waiting in the wings to sweep in and make things all better. The corporations do not have our best interests in mind. The current leadership in Washington and in our State Legislature had lied to us for years preparing for their futures while stealing from our children’s and from our own.
Question everything. Do your research. Don’t take anything for granted. Become an informed voter and not just a parrot of rhetoric from your favorite pundit. We must all become seekers of the truth and expose the lies whenever possible. We must stand in solidarity independent of any party. Most of all, we must return to a time of compassion for others.
There was another time in our history when we were faced with the same choices and these immortal words were forever etched in our collective memory.

This is the most challenging time we have seen in our recent history. These are the times you read about and wonder what it was like to live them. We are living them. What will you choose? Will you be one who sat on the sidelines watching or will you be one of those who chose to stand up for Democracy?
