October is LGBT History Month and October 11 was National Coming Out Day. So what does that mean? It means it is a month to celebrate the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community and to encourage the LGBT folks to take the step in coming out to their friends and family. In honor of LGBT History Month, I’ve made a list of some of the Generation X celebrities that have come out as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered.
Chely Wright– This country music singer lived for years in fear of being found out, until she found the courage to come out on her own. Wright said, “I am gay, and I am not seeking to be tolerated. One tolerates a toothache, rush hour traffic, an annoying neighbor with a cluttered yard. I am not a negative to be tolerated.”
Ricky Martin– After calling himself a “fortunate gay man”, the sexy singer went on to say, “These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed.”
Neil Patrick Harris– Once known as the adorable Doogie Howser M.D., Harris now stars on How I Met Your Mother. He said, “I am a very content gay man, living my life to the fullest.” Harris and his partner David Burtka have been together since 2004 and have 1 year old twins.
Wanda Sykes– In 2008 the comedienne told a Las Vegas crowd of about 1000 people that she is gay.”I’m proud to be a woman. I’m proud to be a black woman, and I’m proud to be gay.” She married her wife in 2008 and the couple has 2 ½ year old twins.
Other out and notable Gen X celebrities include:
Actor Sean Hayes
Actress Cynthia Nixon
Talk show host Nate Berkus
Co-host of The Talk Sara Gilbert
Celebrity chef Cat Cora
Actress Portia de Rossi (DeGeneres)
Television star and celebrity stylist Carson Kressley
Actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family)
Don Lemon– CNN anchor Don Lemon came out in May 2011 telling the New York Times, “I think it would be great if everybody could be out…I think if I had seen more people like me who are out and proud, it wouldn’t have taken me 45 years to say it, to walk in the truth.”
Chaz Bono– Chaz originally came out as a lesbian when she was Chastity Bono, daughter of Sonny and Cher. She later came forward to announce that she was transgendered and went on to have surgery and legally change her name to Chaz Bono and to identify as a male. Chaz is an activist and author and is enjoying a stint on Dancing with the Stars.
