The Braxton Miller era is alive and well in Columbus. In his first start, Braxton played well, making plays both on the ground and through the air. His play breathed new life into the offense as the Buckeyes ran over Colorado 37-17.
The Buckeyes set the pace from the first play.
While a holding call canceled Jordan Hall’s opening kickoff return, it set the stage for what was a red-hot start for the Buckeyes. Ohio State’s start shell shocked Colorado and before they could respond, it was 17-0.
The offense came out and put up points quickly. At first, it was the run game led by Jordan Hall and Braxton Miller. Hall continues to show he’s a great running back, dashing through the holes while carrying defenders on his back. Miller also did a great job creating plays with his legs. Granted, at times, he seemed too eager to take off but he still made excellent, almost effortless shifts that left defenders grabbing for air. Hall finished the game with 84 yards on the ground, Miller finished with 83.
A pleasant surprise was Braxton’s ability to make plays through the air.
Miller completed only five passes, but two were for touchdowns. While it’s going to take time for the game to slow down for him, his performance was impressive. He did a good job getting out of the pocket when it collapsed and his running ability set up some of his big passing plays including his 32-yard touchdown strike to Devin Smith.
Meanwhile, the defense came out of the gate and played well. By the time Colorado was able to establish momentum the Buckeyes had a 17-point cushion. The Silver Bullets flew to the ball, put pressure on the quarterback and held the Buffaloes to 76 yards rushing. Ohio State still needs to play a more complete game as Colorado made plays later but overall it was a much better performance.
This game could be the turning point of Ohio State’s season.
For a young team, this week’s performance provides much confidence. For the first time in three weeks, Ohio State had a good performance. The defense played much better, the offense put up points and the special teams made big plays. While the opponent wasn’t up to par, a performance like this builds momentum. This will help the Buckeyes as they begin conference play.
The Buckeyes have a tough three weeks ahead of them. Michigan State comes to town to kickoff conference play. After that, the Buckeyes have the showdown in Lincoln and they follow that up with a trip to Illinois. The next three weeks will tell us much about this team. For now, Buckeye Nation has to be pleased with how this young team was able to respond following a tough loss.
