The religious right owns a few legislators here in California but when it comes to embracing the most rabid, unconstitutional and just plain foaming-at-the-mouth-whacked parts of its agenda, none are the equal of Oklahoma’s Sally Kern. A Republican representing the 84th district (Oklahoma City) in the state legislature, Kern is famous for comments against minorities and women (for which she received a public reprimand from the House of Representatives on May 2, 2011) and for authoring or co-authoring legislation “mandating that students who espouse Young Earth Creationism still receive passing grades in Earth science classes” and an act that included the provision that “Students shall not be penalized or rewarded on account of the religious content of their work” (source: Wikipedia).
But what she is most famous for is her stance against homosexuality.
In 2008 she said, “(S)tudies show that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades. So it’s the death knell of this country. I honestly think it’s the biggest threat our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam (emphasis mine) — which I think is a big threat, okay? Cause what’s happening now is they are going after, in schools, two-year olds…And this stuff is deadly, and it’s spreading, and it will destroy our young people, it will destroy this nation.”
On August 31, 2011, less than two weeks before the tenth anniversary of the 9/11, she reiterated the claim during a taped interview (broadcast Sept. 3) with with Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality to promote her new book, The Stoning of Sally Kern (yeah, she’s claiming victimhood; just another martyr being persecuted by the “vicious” gays). Here’s a transcript of what she said (from Right Wing Watch):
You know if you just look at it in practical terms, which has destroyed and ended the life of more people? Terrorism attack here in America or HIV/AIDS? In the last twenty years, fifteen to twenty years, we’ve had maybe three terrorist attacks on our soil with a little over 5,000 people regrettably losing their lives. In the same time frame, there have been hundreds of thousands who have died because of having AIDS. So which one’s the biggest threat? And you know, every day our young people, adults too, but especially our young people, are bombarded at school, in movies, in music, on TV, in the mall, in magazines, they’re bombarded with ‘homosexuality is normal and natural.’ It’s something they have to deal with every day. Fortunately we don’t have to deal with a terrorist attack every day, and that’s what I mean…
It’s more dangerous, and yes I think that it’s also more dangerous because it will tear down the moral fiber of this nation. We were founded as a nation upon the principles of religion and morality, if we take those out from under our society we will lose what has made us a great nation, we will no longer be a virtuous people, which we see happening already. And without virtue this nation will not survive.
