With David Boren saying on Friday that the Oklahoma Sooners might be considering leaving the Big 12 Conference, questions abound on what will happen with the other teams in the conference if Oklahoma leaves. In-state rivals, Oklahoma State University, gave a pretty good indication on Saturday about what they will do if Oklahoma leaves.
“Oklahoma State University’s athletic program has never been stronger from top to bottom, putting us in a position to explore and pursue options, including the possible expansion of our current conference,” said OSU president Burns Hargis. “We are in close communications with our colleagues at the University of Oklahoma and expect a decision soon that will be in the best interest of our institutions and the state of Oklahoma.”
With that said, it sounds like if Oklahoma leaves the Big 12 Conference, the Oklahoma State Cowboys will follow.
So, if Oklahoma’s two major universities decide to leave the Big 12, where might they end up? The Pac-12 and SEC are the strongest possibilities. However, the Pac-12 might be the best choice, convincing the conference to become the first Super Conference in the nation. A move to the Pac-12 would be a no-brainer for Oklahoma when it comes to competition as they would come in as the new Big Dogs in a conference that has Oregon and Stanford as the only real competitive forces at the moment.
A move to the SEC would be huge for fans as that would mean yearly meetings with teams like LSU, Alabama, Auburn and Florida. However, with all the controversy going on in the SEC, is that something that Oklahoma wants to be involved with? Bob Stoops has his SEC ties though and I am sure he would love the increased competition there.
The best choice for Oklahoma State would be the Pac-12. Much like Texas A&M, heading to the SEC would be a blow to the team, turning them from a contender into a mid-level power in a major conference. At least in the Pac-12, OSU would continue to compete.
Wherever they end up, it will be one of the biggest moves in this conference realignment circus if Oklahoma chooses to leave the Big 12 and would surely be the death blow for the conference as a BCS power.
