Women can be notorious for having a “list”. This is the representation of all things wanted and undesirable in a chosen mate. As we age this list may grow or shorten and sometimes we find ourselves trying something new. I have a few friends in their mid-thirties that have dabbled in the pond of romance with twenty-something year old men. The drama between Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher now has many wondering if a relationship between an older woman and a younger man can work. Wendy Williams stated on one of her shows that Demi should have never married Ashton but merely should have used him for sex and moved on, which prompted an earlier article (see suggested list of articles below to read it).
Some may dislike the term “use” in this scenario; however, let’s be real. This is the twenty-first century. Using people for sex is not a new phenomenon, but the acceptability or appropriateness of women openly admitting to doing it is fairly new. Popular characters like Samantha on Sex and the City revolutionized many young girls view on sex when the show aired in the late 90’s, and now more women are being honest about their right to satisfy their physical urges. After all, should this only be reserved to men? Most would argue it is not. When it comes to love sometimes you may find it with a person you never would have imagined, even if he happens to be younger. One should love because it feels right, not because a partner meets all the check points on your list. I am not saying to abandon your standards; on the contrary I am only suggesting that if you find that you have met a younger man and you both are feeling one another do not put restrictions on yourself if the only major thing you can find fault with is his age.
Thus to conclude the discussion on how far women should take things when trying something new with a younger man the answer is quite simply that you should go as far as you dare to go. Don’t restrict yourself based on perceived societal norms and other people’s opinions. It is about compatibility. Also it is well known by most that maturity and a man’s preparedness to be a man has nothing to do with age. In the case of Demi and Ashton they are not the paradigm of unconventional love, and just because he allegedly cheated does not mean all men with older women will. To revisit a popular song that epitomizes this notion of love despite age please enjoy the attached video of Aaliyah’s “Age ain’t nothin’ but a number”. Keep it real ladies.
