Representative Jared Polis, the first openly gay freshman elected to U.S. Congress, has just become the first gay father in Congress. On Friday, Sept. 30, the Colorado Democrat and his partner, Marlon Reis, announced the birth of their son, Caspian Julius.
Polis and Reis announced the news in an email statement, which read:
Baby and parents are doing well, baby has learned to cry already! No gifts please, just nice thoughts for Caspian, humankind, the planet, and the universe!
Caspian Julius weighed 8 lbs, 12 oz. at birth, which the fathers have declined to comment wether was through adoption or surrogacy.
That didn’t sit well with the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage, which found a way to villify the joyous occassion of a wanted child entering the world with two committed, capable and loving parents.
In response to Polis’ announcement, NOM published its hateful two cents on NOMblog under the spiteful heading “Jared Polis Announces with Pride His Child Has No Mother” (Warning: Link includes inflammatory, homophobic comments):
We have no clue whether it was a planned motherless family or whether he and his partner stepped in to give a motherless child a family–since he will not say.
Polis has insisted that the baby’s origin is a private family matter – which it is. Nevertheless, NOM’s commentary would seem to imply that they do, in fact, consider Polis, Reis and their newborn son to be a family.
For my part, I’m thrilled to add my congratulations to Rep. Polis and his family, and look forward to seeing more smart, progressive legislative action from Polis, when he isn’t on Daddy Duty.
