Our primary concern when Electronic Arts launched Origin was whether or not it would be up to the task of the demand surrounding Battlefield 3. Things aren’t looking particularly well now as the limited early access beta for the game has already taken the service down.
As of approximately 9 a.m. EST this morning, Origin is completely down which primarily affects PC gamers looking to get hold of the Battlefield 3 beta via a code emailed to them. The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the beta do not rely on Origin to redeem the beta codes console owners are able to go ahead and launch the beta.
However, the beta keys appear to be a problem as well. Electronic Arts announced that the beta keys would be sent out around midnight on September 26 so that “most” everyone would have their beta keys. However, a large number of people on Twitter and in the EA forums are complaining about not receiving an email with their key. They are still slowly being rolled out to those eligible.
This should serve as a huge warning to Electronic Arts that it needs to make sure that there is plenty of capacity to handle Battlefield 3 when the game releases in October or else the launch of one of the most anticipated PC games of the year will be problematic at best.
Update: It looks like Electronic Arts and DICE was quickly able to add capacity as Origin is now back up. Good on them.
Update 2: Some beta participants are reporting matchmaking problems but that is what you have to expect with betas in reality. However, some early beta participants are reporting that they pre-ordered the game for one platform but received a beta key for another.
Update 3: Another common problem now appearing is that some users can’t even connect to the Battlefield 3 servers after launching the game, particularly on the Xbox 360. DICE’s Daniel Matros tweeted the following.
Just a heads up to you all. Currently the EA Online servers are experiencing some issues which affect the ability of Xbox 360 users to play the game. Our IT team is working on it and I’ll keep you update when I get an ETA
Update 4: Remember guys, it is a beta. The latest:
The EA Online servers are experiencing issues and we’re working to get them back up ASAP.
Update 5: The latest on the early acess beta keys as of 11:50 a.m. EST.
